The FIA addressed the concerns of drivers regarding the proposed increase in the maximum speed of the future Formula 1 car in 2026, emphasizing the commitment to avoid unnecessary risks. In a recent statement, the FIA outlined the guidelines that will shape the revised technical regulations, focusing on creating lighter, narrower, and smaller vehicles. These next-generation cars will have a 30% reduction in aerodynamic pressure and 55% in resistance, resulting in slower cornering speeds but higher straight-line performance. However, the possibility of higher speeds has worried drivers, especially regarding safety implications. George Russell, director of the GPDA, expressed these concerns.
One aspect contributing to the higher speed is the introduction of active aerodynamics and the “Manual Override Mode,” which gives drivers an electric boost when chasing another car, allowing them to reach speeds of up to 337 km/h. FIA Technical Director Jan Monchaux addressed these concerns, ensuring that the regulatory body has the means to avoid any safety risks associated with excessive speeds. Monchaux explained that, although the maximum speed may be slightly higher than current levels, the FIA is actively addressing concerns and taking necessary measures to ensure safety. The organization can regulate the low-resistance configuration by limiting the opening of the rear and front wings on specific straights, thus controlling the maximum achievable speed.
“And similarly, we observe the use of electric power.
“We have the necessary provisions, if needed, to readjust where we deem necessary, in order to ensure that the maximum speed achieved is comparable to actual speeds.
“We are not interested in taking unnecessary risks and allowing cars to reach speeds of 380 km/h in a straight line in Monaco.
“This is absurd and will not happen if we do not take any action. The risk will still be present, but we are fully aware of it.
“And we will ensure that, once the cars are more developed, the level of simulation of the teams will also be more advanced.
“That’s where the necessary modifications and adjustments will be made to ensure comparability with current standards. Approximately plus or minus five km/h.”
Meanwhile, Nikolas Tombazis, Director of FIA Single Seater, emphasized that the rules have not yet been officially approved and there will be time to discuss possible changes with the teams.
“We have not reached the final set of regulations yet,” Tombazis stated. “There are still several aspects that require refinement and discussion with the teams.
“We are fully aware of certain concerns, such as the level of aerodynamic pressure and straight-line speed of the cars.
“These are considered refinements that still need to be addressed.
“Therefore, between the end of this month, when the regulations will hopefully be published, and the beginning of 2025, when the teams can start aerodynamic development (as they cannot start before), we anticipate a significant amount of additional work to be done in close consultation with the teams, FOM, and all other stakeholders.
“We hope this will lead to refinements that will be submitted to the World Council, possibly later in the year, and we hope they will be approved.”
