#7: Porsche Penske Motorsports, Porsche 963, GTP: Felipe Nasr, Dane Cameron
Felipe Nasr and Dane Cameron, driving the Porsche 963 #7, emerged victorious in the Six Hours of Glen of IMSA, an exciting race characterized by heavy rain that led to a red flag and several incidents throughout the six-hour duration.
Renger van der Zande secured second place in the Cadillac V-Series.R #01, achieving a commendable result alongside his teammate Sebastien Bourdais.
Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy, driving the Porsche 963 #6, claimed third place. The three teams were separated by just 2.8 seconds when the race was resumed for the last time, with approximately 15 minutes remaining.
Louis Deletraz started the race on pole position in the Acura ARX-06 #40 from WTRAndretti. However, he quickly fell behind van der Zande, who made a fast start, and Phil Hanson in the JDC Miller Porsche #85.
After a yellow flag due to a stalled LMP2 car on the track, Hanson overtook van der Zande to take the lead, with Jack Aitken also passing the South African driver in the Cadillac V-Series.R #31.
During the subsequent yellow flag caused by an incident in the lower classes, the top 11 GTPs made pit stops. The only exception was Connor de Phillippi in the BMW M Hybrid V8 #25, who had started from the pitlane.
De Phillippi’s teammate, Philipp Eng, driving the BMW #24, was the first car to exit the pits, followed by Aitken and Tijmen van der Helm, who had replaced Hanson in the JDC Miller Porsche #85.
Aitken quickly took the lead from Eng, with van der Zande also overtaking to secure second place.
When the pit stop cycle began again, Cameron, Nasr’s teammate, took the lead. Meanwhile, the rain started to fall and some cars chose to make pit stops to change tires for wet track conditions.
With three hours remaining, the race was interrupted once again due to a major incident involving two GTD cars in the last corner. Cameron was leading at the time, but had not yet made the pit stop to change tires for wet track conditions, unlike the cars behind him, including his teammate Nick Tandy. However, the rain subsided while the safety car was on the track and when Cameron finally made the stop, Porsche decided not to equip the car with wet weather tires, but opted for new slicks.
When the race resumed, Cameron, still in the lead, was followed by Jordan Taylor in the WTRAndretti Acura #40. Matteo Cairoli in the Lamborghini SC63 #63 held third place.
After another brief yellow flag caused by an incident involving the Lamborghini GTD Iron Dames, the race restarted again with Cameron maintaining a two-second advantage. However, Filipe Albuquerque in the Acura WTRAndretti #10, the sister car to Deletraz and Taylor’s machine, began to close in on Cameron. Eventually, Albuquerque overtook Cameron, going slightly off track at the bus stop to secure the lead.
However, the rain intensified once again. With cars sliding off the track in almost every corner, the race was stopped to ensure the safety of all participants.
During this period, while cars made pit stops to change tires for wet track, Deletraz took the lead from Ricky Taylor, who had replaced Albuquerque in the Acura #10. De Phillippi in the BMW #25 occupied third place. The two Porsches, driven by Jaminet and Nasr, respectively occupied fifth and sixth positions.
With approximately 40 minutes remaining, the cars returned to the track to refuel and change tires. Upon returning to the race, Deletraz maintained the lead, followed by Nasr, van der Zande, and Jaminet in fourth.
The race was about to restart with less than half an hour remaining, but the WTRAndretti #10 car encountered a disaster. The car lost its rear wheel in the esses, forcing Ricky Taylor to park it on the left side of the track and retire from the race.
The race restarted with approximately 15 minutes remaining. Deletraz immediately lost the lead to Nasr, just as had happened at the start of the race. He then conceded second place to van der Zande, with Jaminet also overtaking him to secure third.
With a Porsche in first and third, with van der Zande’s Cadillac in between, the three drivers fought hard to secure the victory. Nasr and Jaminet traded fastest laps several times, with Nasr initially setting the fastest lap only for Jaminet to surpass him seconds later.
The three drivers navigated through GT and LMP2 cars, with the gaps fluctuating. However, none of them were able to make significant progress or reduce the gap enough to change positions. Thus, Nasr claimed the victory, with van der Zande in second and Jaminet in third.
Deletraz disappointingly finished in fourth place for the WTRAndretti team, while Eng and de Phillippi in the BMWs secured fifth and sixth places, respectively. Gianmaria Bruni finished seventh in the Proton Competition Porsche 963 #5, one lap behind the leaders, while Aitken finished eighth, not far behind Bruni.
In the LMP2 class, Ferrari factory driver and recent Le Mans winner Nicklas Nielsen, along with Luis Perez Companc and Lilou Wadoux, emerged victorious in the Richard Mille AF Corse Oreca 07-Gibson #88. The car started in ninth place with Perez Companc at the wheel and delivered a consistent performance throughout the race.
They steadily climbed up the field in the first half of the race and were in second place at the halfway point, with Wadoux taking over the wheel. Nielsen took the lead before the red flag and managed to hold onto it until the end. Despite a late attempt by Felipe Fraga in the Riley Oreca 07-Gibson #74 to overtake for the lead and potentially secure the win, Nielsen defended his position and crossed the finish line 38 seconds ahead of Colin Braun in the Crowdstrike by APR Oreca 07-Gibson #04. Fraga finished third, 2.6 seconds behind Braun.
