The M-Sport Ford World Rally Team achieved an incredible milestone at the recent Rally Italia Sardegna, marking their 300th consecutive point in the FIA World Rally Championship. This unprecedented achievement, never before seen in any other motorsport, was made possible thanks to the extraordinary performances of Adrien Fourmaux and Grégoire Munster, who played a vital role in this historic accomplishment.
This remarkable record began 22 years ago, when Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae finished third and fourth respectively at the 2002 Rallye Monte Carlo, driving the Ford Focus WRC. Since that crucial event, M-Sport has consistently scored points in the Manufacturers’ Championship in every rally they have participated in, reaching significant milestones along the way. These include the 100th event at the Rally of Turkey in 2008, the 200th event at the Rally of Mexico in 2016, and now the 300th event at the Rally of Sardinia in 2024.
Spanning six continents, 29 countries, and covering a total distance of 84,365 km, this extraordinary achievement is the result of unwavering dedication and hard work from 29 drivers, 38 co-drivers, and the entire M-Sport team.
Reflecting on this incredible journey, M-Sport UK President Malcolm Wilson shared some of his fondest memories from the past 22 years. One of these special moments was the 2006 Rallye Monte Carlo, where Marcus Grönholm secured a debut victory in the new Ford Focus RS WRC. Wilson described it as a “classic” moment, highlighting the importance of winning in Monte Carlo, a rally that holds great prestige for team bosses and manufacturers.
Another memorable highlight was the 2006 New Zealand Rally, which served as the penultimate rally of the season. The BP Ford World Rally Team was on the verge of winning their first manufacturers’ trophy, and Grönholm and Mikko Hirvonen showcased their skills by securing first and second positions, earning maximum points and securing the FIA World Rally Manufacturers’ Championship for M-Sport for the first time. This was a monumental achievement for Wilson’s Cumbria team.
However, the most significant memory for Wilson will always be the 2017 Wales Rally GB, which he admits brought tears to his eyes. The final stage of the rally witnessed several accomplishments for M-Sport. Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja finished the power stage, securing the team’s third manufacturers’ championship. Shortly after, Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia completed the rally, winning the first drivers’ and co-drivers’ championships for M-Sport. Finally, Elfyn Evans and Dan Barritt crossed the finish line, securing their first victory in the WRC. This thrilling and eventful rally holds a special place in Wilson’s heart as it showcased M-Sport’s resilience and success as a semi-official team.
These memories are not significant only to Wilson but also to the entire M-Sport team as they reflect the numerous achievements and milestones accomplished throughout their remarkable journey in the world of rallying.
