The 11th race of the 2024 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season will follow a sprint format, consisting of a 100km race at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on Saturday, followed by the main event on Sunday.
The three-time world champion from Red Bull, supported by their enthusiastic orange fans, aims to increase their 69-point advantage over their nearest competitor, Norris, who drives for the McLaren team with their orange livery.
Norris is determined to prove himself after securing pole position in Spain last Sunday and finishing in second place. He also achieved second place in Canada, feeling that he should have emerged victorious in both races.
The Spielberg circuit has the shortest lap time on the F1 calendar, with Verstappen securing pole position last year in just over 64 seconds.
Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, anticipates fierce competition due to the shortness of the circuit. He expects McLaren and Lando Norris to display impressive speed once again and remains uncertain about the performance of Ferrari and Mercedes. Horner notes that the gap between Red Bull and their rivals after the Spanish race was similar to the previous year, highlighting the significant progress made by Norris.
“We are currently engaged in intense battles for victories and must perform to the best of our abilities as a team,” commented Horner, emphasizing the competitive nature of Formula 1.
Norris emerged victorious in Miami in May and also secured a second place finish in both Imola and China. Last year’s Austrian Grand Prix, won by Verstappen for the fourth time in six years, marked a significant turning point for McLaren, who introduced innovative upgrades.
In 23 races, the British driver has now achieved 10 second places. In Barcelona, he finished behind Verstappen by 2.2 seconds and in Canada, the difference was 3.8 seconds. The margin in Imola was 0.7 seconds, while he surpassed the Dutch driver by 7.6 seconds in Miami.
Austria and Silverstone are circuits where Norris has historically performed well and considers them favorites. He expressed confidence in his team’s current momentum, stating: “We are on a positive streak. We are doing admirably… I just need to fine-tune some details and we will be at the top. I have faith. Every weekend we enter now, the car is delivering exceptional results. We are consistently only a few tenths away from pole position.”
Verstappen, anticipating his second “home race” at the Red Bull Ring, shared his thoughts in the team preview: “We always feel very welcome and love coming back to Austria, as it is a home race for Red Bull. It is fantastic to witness the support of the Orange Army fans in the stands. This weekend we will have another Sprint race, which always results in a chaotic and busy schedule for us.
“It is crucial to immediately find the right car setup and analyze how we can build and improve on our previous performances, especially given the intense nature of qualifying here. The track offers ample overtaking opportunities, so I am sure it will be an exciting race.
“The team did admirably here last year, so I hope we can make the fans proud once again and secure another victory,” declared Verstappen, who aims to achieve his 62nd career victory in F1 and his eighth victory in the Grand Prix in 2024. He has already won the Austrian Grand Prix title four times, breaking records.
Perez and Piastri, teammates of Verstappen and Norris respectively, are eager to make their mark after disappointing results in Spain. The Mexican driver could only manage a disappointing eighth place, while the Australian driver settled for seventh place.
Perez, who recently extended his contract with Red Bull for two years, understands the importance of delivering a strong performance this weekend. He reflected on his challenging weekend in Spain, mentioning: “I faced difficulties with the car’s balance throughout the weekend. We couldn’t find a consistent setup that worked well for both qualifying and the race. Additionally, the grid penalty made our progress even more difficult.
“This weekend in Austria, we have all the necessary elements to have a smoother weekend. The team and I are aware of the areas we need to improve and make adjustments, and we will implement those changes. Now it’s my responsibility to extract the maximum potential from the car, even with limited practice time due to the Sprint weekend.
“I must take advantage of the first practice session and attack both qualifying and the Sprint race from the beginning. We aim for a complete weekend. The Austrian Grand Prix is always a fantastic event as it serves as Red Bull’s home race and creates an incredible atmosphere. I’m looking forward to it,” Perez added.
In tabloid format, the text can be presented in the following separate paragraphs:
Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time F1 world champion, achieved his first podium of the season with Mercedes in Spain. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz of Ferrari holds the race lap record at the Red Bull Ring, although it was set in 2020.
Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes, expressed caution in his team’s preview, stating that the upcoming circuit is very different from the previous one. The track consists of a mixture of low to medium speed sections, with occasional longer straights. This will represent a new challenge and serve as a reference point for our car.
Last year’s chaos, where the results were revised five hours after the race due to several penalties for exceeding track limits, should no longer be a concern. To address this issue, turns nine and ten now have a gravel strip.
