Lando Norris is confident that McLaren has the ability to surpass Max Verstappen and Red Bull to win the Formula 1 championship in 2024. However, he emphasized the importance of eliminating minor mistakes to achieve this goal. McLaren has maintained its momentum from the previous season and has become the main competitor to Red Bull since the introduction of updates in Miami, which contributed to Norris’ victory. The MCL38 has proven to be more consistent than its competitors’ cars, but McLaren has not been able to fully capitalize on this advantage, losing victories in Canada and Spain. A strategic error cost McLaren dearly in Montreal, while Norris was disappointed to fall behind Verstappen early on in Barcelona, despite having the faster car. Despite moving up to second place in the drivers’ standings with his sixth podium of the season, Norris is still 69 points behind Verstappen. He believes that a championship challenge is possible this season, but acknowledges that McLaren cannot afford to let the gap between them and Verstappen increase in the upcoming races. When asked about the realistic possibility of fighting for the title this season, Norris expressed his belief that it is achievable. He also expressed his disappointment in not being able to score more points than Verstappen in the recent races, highlighting missed opportunities in Canada and the need for Verstappen to stop winning in order for McLaren to have a chance in the championship. Norris emphasized that his position in the championship standings is not as important as narrowing the gap to Verstappen. He believes that McLaren has what it takes to win races and championships, but it is crucial to make better decisions and have stronger starts to achieve this. Norris reiterated his earlier statement that small mistakes are currently the only thing separating McLaren from Red Bull, and it is up to his team to eliminate these errors. He acknowledged that even the smallest mistake can give Red Bull the advantage, and although McLaren has had the faster car in some cases, they still finished second due to these small errors.
“But each circuit is a little unique. As we witnessed Red Bull facing some difficulties a few races ago.
“I believe we are consistently proving to be one of the most reliable teams at every circuit we visit.
“Mercedes was fast last weekend in Canada, but now they seem to be a little behind here. So it’s a bit unpredictable.
“We just need to continue with our current approach because it’s enough for now. However, we should strive to eliminate some of these minor mistakes.”
As we head to the Red Bull Ring, the place where Norris achieved his first podium in F1 in 2021, he acknowledges that McLaren may have hopes of remaining competitive.
However, the Grand Prix winner agrees with team boss Andrea Stella that the Woking-based team must find more speed in high-speed sections to match Red Bull.
“I have confidence,” he expressed. “Every weekend we enter now, the car is performing exceptionally well.
“We are always in contention, within a few tenths of the pole position, and that’s all we can ask for.
“I think we need to introduce some improvements to make our job a little easier.
“It’s a fierce competition, and now we have, what, four teams that I believe can easily compete for pole positions and victories. So it’s a completely different scenario.
“In terms of high-speed performance, we have some areas to improve compared to Red Bull. Red Bull definitely excels in high-speed corners more than us.
“Maybe we’re a bit lacking in that aspect, but the rest of our performance is strong.
“This track has been one of the best in terms of my own competitiveness and success, so I’m excited to see the whole papaya and have a great weekend.”
