George Russell secured his second victory in Formula 1 career by taking the lead after an accident between Norris and Verstappen. Russell was in third place before the incident occurred, and he successfully defended his position against McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
Mercedes ended their winless streak with this victory, which dates back to the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix, also won by Russell. However, team boss Wolff acknowledged that there is still work to be done before Mercedes can consistently compete for wins.
Mercedes has been trying to lure Verstappen away from Red Bull, although both Verstappen and team boss Christian Horner have denied any intention of a move, at least until 2025.
During a media session in Spielberg, Wolff was asked if Mercedes’ recent win was enough to convince Verstappen to switch teams. Red Bull is fighting hard to maintain their advantage, with McLaren closing in and Ferrari also making progress.
Wolff realistically responded, stating that currently they rely on incidents involving the leaders to secure wins. He emphasized the need for Mercedes to improve their own performance to consistently challenge Verstappen and Norris.
While Wolff acknowledges that Mercedes aims to be an attractive destination for top drivers, including Verstappen, he admitted that they are not at that level yet. He believes that if he were in Verstappen’s position, he would not consider a move at this time.
A Mercedes had a fierce battle with Verstappen and Red Bull in 2021, with the Dutchman emerging victorious in the end. However, there were several controversial moments throughout the season. McLaren team boss Andrea Stella suggested that if Verstappen had been properly penalized for his actions in 2021, the incident with Norris at the Red Bull Ring could have been avoided. Wolff, on the other hand, was more cautious in reaching the same conclusion.
He stated that he cannot make a judgment without watching the race and understanding how the incident unfolded. He does not believe that the mismanagement of 2021 will have a significant impact on the events of 2024.
