After emerging victorious at the Paris Olympics, Novak Djokovic provided an insight into his thoughts and emotions.
Novak Djokovic secured his first-ever gold medal at the Paris Olympics after defeating Carlos Alcaraz from Spain in the singles final. The 37-year-old later disclosed that he gave his all, including his heart, soul, body, and family, in order to claim the Olympic title.
Merely two months ago, Djokovic faced the possibility of jeopardizing his Olympic dream as he required knee surgery after his time at Roland Garros. However, the Serbian managed to recover in time for Wimbledon, where he finished as the runner-up to Alcaraz. Prior to the Olympics, he was considered the second favorite to win gold, with Alcaraz being the favorite.
Djokovic emerged victorious in all four of his matches at the Summer Games without dropping a single set. Although he experienced a moment of concern due to an injury against Stefanos Tsitsipas, he continued to deliver a fantastic all-round performance, ultimately defeating Alcaraz in straight sets during the final. Overwhelmed with disbelief, the Serbian threw his racquet after securing the victory and celebrated by unfurling a Serbian flag while running towards his family.
Following the match, the 37-year-old expressed his admiration for Alcaraz’s performance and conveyed his satisfaction with the outcome.
Carlos Alcaraz, after hugging Djokovic at the net, dropped to his knees in tears. The Spaniard departs from his maiden Olympics with a silver medal, while Lorenzo Musetti from Italy claimed the bronze.
Novak Djokovic shattered numerous records upon winning the gold medal in singles at the Paris Olympics. At the age of 37 years, 2 months, and 12 days, he becomes the oldest player to compete in the Olympic singles final and secure gold. Additionally, he is now the sole player to have won both gold and bronze medals in singles, with the latter achieved in Beijing 2008.
Furthermore, Djokovic has accomplished the career Golden Slam, signifying his triumph in all four Grand Slam tournaments and the Olympic title. He joins an elite group of players, including Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Serena Williams, and Steffi Graf, as the fifth individual to achieve this feat.
Moreover, the former World No. 1 has won each of the nine Masters titles at least twice and each Grand Slam at least thrice, a record that no other player has attained. Djokovic’s remarkable achievements have solidified his claim as potentially the greatest tennis player of all time.
