Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis player, has been awarded a cash prize of 200,000 euros ($218,293) for winning a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. The Government of Serbia presented him with this reward, which he decided to donate entirely to charitable causes.
Throughout the year, Djokovic had been determined to secure a medal for his country at the Olympics. Despite facing a knee injury during the French Open, he made a swift recovery and reached the finals in two tournaments. Although he suffered a loss at Wimbledon, he avenged it by defeating Carlos Alcaraz at the Olympics.
During the Games, Djokovic performed exceptionally well, progressing smoothly through the rounds. However, he experienced knee pain in the quarterfinal match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Despite this setback, he returned the following day and defeated Lorenzi Musetti, setting up a final showdown with Alcaraz. In the final, Djokovic displayed outstanding tennis skills and emerged victorious with a score of 7-6(3), 7-6(2).
This triumph earned Serbia its second medal at the Paris Games, and Djokovic received a prize of 200,000 euros ($218,293). According to B92, he has decided to donate the entire amount to various charitable organizations.
Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena Djokovic are the founders of ‘The Novak Djokovic Foundation’. Having experienced financial difficulties in his early years, Djokovic frequently contributes to charitable causes. In February 2024, his foundation raised around $93,900 to construct a kindergarten in a remote Serbian village. The foundation has already supported approximately 54,800 children and continues its efforts to assist more.
This is not the first time Djokovic has made significant donations. He has consistently aided communities in need, including providing assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic and supporting flood relief initiatives. On one occasion, he even donated his entire tournament earnings to support flood relief efforts in Serbia.
