Carlos Alcaraz restated his future objectives during the Media Day of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. One of the main aims of the Spaniard is to regain the top spot in the ATP ranking and overthrow the current leader Jannik Sinner. To accomplish this, he will need to surpass the competition from his Italian counterpart and friend. There is a significant 820-point gap between Sinner and Alcaraz in the ranking, with a 450-point difference in the Race to Turin.
“Undoubtedly, becoming the ATP number 1 is a recurring goal. I am currently trailing behind, and the Race holds considerable importance in the rankings. If you finish the season at the top of the Race, the rankings become quite comparable. Therefore, I am fully focused on this objective. I intend to approach every tournament with the mindset of playing exceptional tennis and achieving favorable results to enhance my standing in the Race. Concluding the season at the summit is one of my primary aspirations at the present moment,” the Spaniard expressed.
“I am striving to secure the leading position in the Race, and I am eager to achieve this as soon as possible. Cincinnati is an extremely significant tournament, so I will endeavor to exhibit outstanding tennis and assess the outcome. Throughout this year, I have often emerged victorious without necessarily playing exceptional tennis. Mentally, I have displayed resilience in certain situations, and I am genuinely content with that. I am enthusiastic about my ability to handle various circumstances—I always persevere, even when my tennis performance is not at its best. I maintain a positive attitude and actively seek solutions,” he added.
Recalling the unforgettable final defeat against Novak Djokovic last year, as well as the recent final at the Paris Olympics, Carlitos explained: “I am eagerly anticipating competing here once again, and I am delighted to be back. I have fond memories: reaching the final and participating in an epic match. As for the Paris Olympics, I needed a few days away from tennis to clear my mind.”
Considering the points that Sinner and Djokovic must defend until the conclusion of the season, it appears evident that Alcaraz has a chance to reclaim the ATP No. 1 position by year-end. This would serve as the culmination of an extraordinary season for the young Spaniard, who has already triumphed at Indian Wells, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and secured the Olympic silver medal.
