Jannik Sinner will maintain his position as the top-ranked player in the world in the latest ATP rankings, despite falling short in his attempt to defend his title at the 2024 Canadian Open in Montreal.Sinner was aware prior to the tournament that he would remain at number one, as both Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the North American summer hard-court swing.
In the rankings, Alexander Zverev gained 150 points to solidify his fourth-place position and extend his lead over Daniil Medvedev. Andrey Rublev moved up two spots to sixth after finishing as the runner-up in Montreal.Casper Ruud and Grigor Dimitrov each climbed one spot to eighth and ninth, respectively, while Alex de Minaur dropped three places to tenth due to his absence from last week’s competition. The top ten rankings remained unchanged after the Canadian Open.
Taylor Fritz reclaimed his status as the top-ranked American player, surpassing Tommy Paul and settling in 12th place. Ben Shelton sits just below them in 14th, while Sebastian Korda jumped three places to achieve a new career-high ranking of 15th following his semifinal performance in Montreal.
The most significant mover in the top 30 is Alexei Popyrin, the Australian player known for his powerful serves. Popyrin impressively won the Canada Open, defeating Rublev in the final. As a result, he achieved a new personal best ranking of 23rd and became the second-ranked player in his country. Matteo Arnaldi, a 23-year-old from Sanremo, also made waves in Canada, reaching a career-high ranking of 30th. Just below him is Flavio Cobolli in 31st place, another Italian player enjoying a successful summer in the United States.
Jiri Lehecka fell outside of the seeded positions for the upcoming US Open, currently ranked 35th. The young Czech player has been sidelined due to injury since the Madrid tournament. Nuno Borges secured two crucial victories in Montreal, propelling him to the new ranking of 39th in the world.Gael Monfils’ winless streak extended to three matches in Montreal, causing him to drop to 46th in the rankings. Brandon Nakashima re-entered the top 50 after reaching the round of 16 as a qualifier at the Canadian Open, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina fell out of the top 50, currently ranked 53rd.
Arthur Rinderknech, who was on the verge of falling out of the top 100 this season, impressed by reaching the last 16 as a qualifier. He has now reentered the top 60, currently ranked 59th.
Two other Australian players, Rinky Hijikata (65th) and James Duckworth (67th), also made slight improvements in the rankings. Denis Shapovalov is edging closer to a return to the top 100, despite failing to make an impact on home soil as he was eliminated in the first round.Hugo Dellien emerged as the champion of the Bonn Challenger, defeating home player Maximilian Marteter in the final. This marked Dellien’s second title in August, following his triumph at the Liberec Challenger. His victory propelled him to his highest ranking since January, currently sitting at 107th.
In the realm of tabloid journalism, a notable individual who made significant progress within the Top 200 is Jacob Fearnley. He gained recognition for his impressive performance against Novak Djokovic at this year’s Wimbledon, pushing the renowned player to four sets. Following his triumph at the Lincoln Challenger, the British athlete climbed to the 162nd position in the rankings. Furthermore, there were a couple of additional athletes who achieved remarkable success in the ATP’s secondary division over the weekend, resulting in a notable boost in their rankings. Vilius Gaubas, a 19-year-old talent from Lithuania, emerged victorious in the Cordenons tournament, securing his first-ever Challenger title. Remarkably, Gaubas only lost one set throughout the entire week, propelling him to the 186th spot in the rankings.
Similarly, Facundo Mena triumphed in the Bogota Challenger, marking a significant milestone in his career. Both Gaubas and Mena made their debut in the Top 200 rankings, with Gaubas securing the 186th position and Mena claiming the 195th spot.
