Iga Swiatek is comfortably positioned at the top of the WTA rankings, despite her absence from the recent Canadian Open. Swiatek was unable to participate in the tournament due to her involvement in the Olympic Games. Several other players ranked in the Top 20, including Qinwen Zheng, Jasmine Paolini, and Donna Vekic, also opted out of the event to rest after winning medals in Paris. Although Swiatek lost points for not attending the Canadian Open, it had minimal impact on her substantial lead over the rest of the field. Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka, who were potential contenders, were unable to take advantage as they were eliminated before the semifinals in Toronto. Gauff was upset in the round of 16 by Diana Shanider, while Sabalenka made it to the quarterfinals but was defeated by Amanda Anisimova. Gauff, who maintained her No. 2 ranking, may need to defend her Cincinnati title to secure a top-two seeding for the upcoming US Open, especially if Sabalenka performs well this week.
Elena Rybakina, who missed the Canadian Open due to health issues, remained unchallenged in fourth place. Jessica Pegula successfully defended her WTA 1000 title in Toronto, defeating Anismova in the final. Pegula’s position in the Top 10 was under threat earlier in the season due to injuries and changes in coaching staff, but she has regained her form and currently holds the sixth spot. Danielle Collins dropped two places to 10th, while Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova each moved up one spot to eighth and ninth, respectively. Emma Navarro achieved a new career-high ranking of No. 13 after reaching her first semifinal at a WTA 1000 event. Diana Shnaider, a Russian left-handed player, made her debut in the Top 20 after her performance in Toronto. She defeated top seed Gauff on her way to the semifinals, where she lost to Pegula. Paula Badosa, who recently won her first WTA title in two years, is moving closer to securing a seeding spot at the US Open.
The Spaniard has climbed to 37th in the rankings after winning six of her last seven matches. Sorana Cirstea, currently ranked 41st, has dropped out of the Top 40 and will not compete again this season due to a foot injury. Thanks to Anisimova’s impressive run in Toronto, the United States now has the highest representation in the Top 50 of the WTA rankings, surpassing the Czech Republic with a total of eight players. Anisimova, who is 22 years old and ranked 48th, has achieved her best ranking since returning from a break for mental health reasons this season. She was the runner-up at the 2024 Canadian Open, defeating four Top 20 players along the way.
There is a possibility of having two more individuals from the United States among the top 50 players in the near future. Taylor Townsend has moved up to the 53rd position, while Ashlyn Krueger has achieved her highest career ranking at 65th.
Anna Bondar from Hungary emerged as the champion of the Hamburg WTA 125K competition, resulting in a significant jump of 15 places to reach the 79th spot. Additionally, McCartney Kessler, an American player, secured victory in the esteemed W100 Landisville ITF tournament, marking her debut in the top 100 with a ranking of 100th.
