Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, two prominent figures in professional golf, will go head-to-head at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis this week. This highly anticipated event will showcase 70 of the world’s top golfers, including renowned players like Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, and former champions Will Zalatoris and Justin Thomas.
Both Scheffler and Schauffele have had exceptional seasons, making them stand out among their peers. Scheffler currently holds the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking as well as the FedEx Cup Playoff standings, while Schauffele follows closely behind at number two in both categories. Scheffler recently clinched the gold medal for the United States at the Paris Olympics, while Schauffele secured the gold in Tokyo three years ago.
In 2024, three out of the four major golf championships were won by either Scheffler or Schauffele. Scheffler emerged victorious at the Masters, where Schauffele finished eighth, marking Scheffler’s second green jacket. Schauffele, on the other hand, triumphed at the PGA Championship and the British Open, with Scheffler achieving top-10 finishes in both events. The remaining major, the U.S. Open, was won by Bryson DeChambeau, who will not be participating in this year’s Memphis tournament due to his association with LIV Golf. Schauffele tied for seventh at the U.S. Open, while Scheffler tied for 41st.
Let’s not forget about the Players Championship, often referred to as golf’s fifth major, held in March. Scheffler emerged as the champion, with Schauffele closely behind in second place, just one stroke behind Scheffler’s lead.
Considering their remarkable performances and achievements, it is highly likely that either Scheffler or Schauffele will be the favored contender to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Although neither has claimed victory in Memphis before, their previous successes in this tournament, combined with their exceptional form this season, instill confidence even in the most hesitant bettors.
