Dennis Allen, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, has not achieved the same level of success as renowned coaches like Sean Payton in the vibrant city of New Orleans. However, he does have several exceptional athletes on his team who have reached remarkable standards in the National Football League.
One of these athletes is Alvin Kamara, whom Allen provided an update on regarding his injury. Allen stated that Kamara only participated in walk-throughs during Tuesday’s practice due to tightness in his back. Allen reassured that Kamara’s injury is not a significant concern.
Allen’s comments regarding Kamara were made during the announcement of a new wide receiver who had a standout college career. Following the Saints’ preseason victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Allen shared his thoughts on Charlie Smyth’s game-winning field goal.
During the first week of the preseason, the Saints’ running game struggled against the Cardinals, with seven players, including Kamara, attempting rushes. Kamara, a legendary figure for the Saints, only had two carries for three yards, averaging 1.5 yards per carry.
Spencer Rattler, a rookie quarterback, rushed twice for eight yards, averaging four yards per carry, which was the highest average among Coach Allen’s team. Meanwhile, Jordan Mims led the Saints in rushing, accumulating 38 yards on ten attempts. Due to Kamara’s injury and limited carries, it seems that the Saints are preserving him for future challenges.
Spencer Rattler, former standout Jamaal Williams, and the rest of the Saints will have numerous opportunities to accumulate rushing yards in the upcoming weeks leading to the regular season opener against the Panthers in New Orleans on September 8.
At 29 years old, Kamara is still in the prime of his career. Surprisingly, he has yet to achieve a 1,000-yard rushing season, but he holds the record for the most 1,000-yard seasons in terms of all-purpose yards in the history of the Saints franchise.
Despite playing on a struggling football team last season, Kamara accumulated over 1,000 combined receiving and rushing yards. This year holds the potential for greater success if Kamara performs to his full potential and Coach Allen’s team has the energy to challenge Todd Bowles and the reigning NFC South Division champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
