The annual NBA GM survey has set the internet on fire, as fans react to one of its most eyebrow-raising decisions: naming Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum over NBA legends LeBron James and Kevin Durant as the best small forward in the league. The survey, which pulls back the curtain on the thoughts of NBA executives, posed 50 questions, including which player reigns supreme at each position. But this particular response didn’t sit well with fans.
Social media exploded with fans questioning the GMs’ call, especially with LeBron and Durant both coming off seasons where they showed no signs of slowing down. One fan remarked that, in a seven-game series, it would be hard to take Tatum over either of the veteran icons. After all, LeBron continues to defy Father Time with his versatility and game IQ, while Durant is as lethal as ever when healthy.
Tatum, however, is coming off one of his best seasons yet. Leading the Celtics to another strong playoff run, he showcased an expanded offensive arsenal and increased leadership, which has clearly resonated with NBA decision-makers. Tatum’s rise has cemented him as a force in the league, but fans seem unconvinced that it’s enough to rank him above two all-time greats.
In another notable survey result, Stephen Curry remains highly esteemed, with 87% of GMs voting him as the NBA’s top pure shooter and 83% voting him as the best player at moving without the ball. Surprisingly, however, the Golden State Warriors were not considered title favorites this year, signaling a changing of the guard even as Curry’s individual greatness remains unquestioned.
The GMs also ranked the Denver Nuggets as the team with the league’s best home-court advantage, showing respect for the reigning champions. Yet, with all the major offseason moves, it’s anyone’s guess who will stand tall come June.
The NBA’s 2024-25 season tips off on October 22, and with teams reloaded and rankings debated, all eyes are on the opening weekend. Will Tatum prove the GMs right and solidify his claim as the league’s top small forward? Or will LeBron and Durant remind everyone why they’ve held that title for so long? The season promises no shortage of drama.
