The New England Patriots’ 2024 season has been rough, and it just got a lot more complicated. After a disappointing start with veteran Jacoby Brissett under center, the team announced they’re handing the reins to rookie Drake Maye for Week 6. While fans were initially skeptical about the Patriots drafting Maye so high, they’ve now had a change of heart after witnessing the offensive line’s struggles.
Yet, not everyone is sold on the timing of this decision. Patriots superfan and sports commentator Bill Simmons didn’t hold back, calling it “the dumbest, most incompetent” move he’s seen in years, going so far as to compare it to the days of former owner Victor Kiam. “If they were going to start Maye,” Simmons argued on YouTube, “why not ease him in against Miami last week instead of throwing him into the fire against Houston’s defense?”
Led by Will Anderson, the Texans’ defense has been one of the league’s best this season, and Simmons fears this debut could hurt the rookie’s confidence and risk further stalling the Patriots’ offense. With the team already sitting at 1-4, the Patriots’ decision to start Maye now has left fans and analysts alike questioning the team’s long-term plan.
For his part, Maye is ready to step up, but whether this bold move will pay off or backfire remains to be seen.
