Max Verstappen was the great dominator of the Mexican Grand Prix in Formula 1, obtaining the 16th victory of the year which is a new record. The man from Red Bull crossed the finish line with almost 14 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).
The Dutchman revealed that the originally planned strategy was compromised by the red flag: ‘The car’s pace was very good. We planned to have a different strategy from everyone else, but unfortunately we couldn’t show that with the red flag. Nevertheless, we were very strong with the hard tires at the end’.
Regarding the new record of victories in a single year, Verstappen commented: ‘Winning 16 races in a season is something I would never have thought possible, this season has been unbelievable’.
Regarding the incident that took his teammate Sergio Pérez out of the race right at the first corner, #1 said: ‘I understand why Checo fought at the beginning, it would have been amazing for him to be on the podium in his home race here in Mexico. Fortunately, the crowd stayed and they were fantastic all weekend, I felt very welcome here as always’.
Finally, Verstappen set his sights on the next round: ‘For now, my mind is already on the next race, let’s see what we can do in Brazil’.
