As the Yankees eye their first World Series since 2009, speculation about 2025 roster moves is already heating up. One surprising name linked to New York is Astros third baseman Alex Bregman. Though the Yankees could use a consistent presence at third base, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter calls New York the “worst landing spot” for the two-time All-Star, given the lingering bad blood from the Astros’ 2017 sign-stealing scandal.
Bregman’s nine-season tenure with Houston has seen him notch two World Series rings, two All-Star selections, and a Silver Slugger Award, solidifying him as one of the league’s top infielders. His current market value is estimated around four years, $119 million, though with Matt Chapman recently signing a $151 million deal, Bregman’s agent Scott Boras could aim for a seven-year, $210 million contract.
The Yankees’ infield could look different next season if they let Gleyber Torres walk in free agency. Jazz Chisholm Jr., acquired at the trade deadline, would likely move to his natural second base position, opening a vacancy at third. Bregman’s consistent bat (.260/.315/.453 with 26 homers in 2024) and postseason experience would seemingly fit, but fans and players in New York may be hesitant to embrace a former Astro after the sign-stealing fallout. Aaron Judge even stated in 2020 that Houston’s 2017 World Series title “holds no value” due to the scandal.
Reuter considers Houston the ideal landing spot for Bregman, especially as Astros teammates like Jose Altuve are lobbying for his return. Altuve recently said, “We’re not going to be the same organization without him.” Meanwhile, Astros GM Dana Brown also expressed optimism about re-signing Bregman, saying, “I think he wants to stay here… it’s just a matter of coming up with some type of an agreement.”
