Germany and the Netherlands are stepping up their military support for Ukraine, announcing on Oct. 17 the delivery of key equipment, including Leopard tanks and advanced air defense systems. Germany’s latest aid package includes eight Leopard 1 A5 main battle tanks, 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles (MRAPs), and two cutting-edge IRIS-T air defense systems. Berlin also sent six Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers, reconnaissance drones, and tens of thousands of artillery shells.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands has ordered six DITA howitzers from the Czech Republic, along with 152mm artillery shells, further strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. This significant military assistance comes as both countries continue to ramp up their support for Kyiv, with Germany now standing as Ukraine’s second-largest military donor, just behind the U.S.
Despite these efforts, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz remains cautious about supplying Taurus long-range missiles, a key capability Ukraine has been requesting. Together, Germany and the Netherlands have committed over 21 billion euros in aid, demonstrating their unwavering support as the war continues to rage on.
