The Cincinnati Reds have tapped a familiar face to lead their hitting program, naming former infielder Chris Valaika as their new Director of Hitting and Major League Hitting Coach. Valaika, who spent the last three seasons in a similar role with the Cleveland Guardians, brings a wealth of experience from both his playing and coaching careers, with roots that trace back to the Reds organization.
Drafted by the Reds in the third round of the 2006 draft, Valaika quickly became a standout, earning Cincinnati’s Minor League Player of the Year honors in 2008. After a four-season Major League career that included stints with the Reds, Miami Marlins, and Chicago Cubs, Valaika transitioned to coaching, joining the Cubs as a Minor League Hitting Coordinator before becoming their Assistant Major League Hitting Coach in 2021.
Now returning to where it all started, Valaika will work to revitalize the Reds’ offense. Known for his hands-on approach and deep understanding of the game, he’s expected to make a strong impact on a team eager to push its offense to new heights.
