After a crushing World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Yankees are staring down an offseason loaded with potential shake-ups. At the top of their priorities list is keeping star slugger Juan Soto, who may enter free agency after just one season in the Bronx. But Soto’s possible departure isn’t the only looming roster decision; the Yankees could also part ways with former All-Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo, opening the door for a high-profile addition like Christian Walker.
According to ESPN’s David Schoenfield, Walker could be the Yankees’ ideal target at first base. Walker, a power-hitting Gold Glove winner with three straight seasons of at least 26 homers, offers the consistent production that Rizzo, plagued by injuries, couldn’t provide in 2024. And with significant money coming off the books, the Yankees are in prime position to pursue both Soto and Walker if they’re willing to shell out.
“With all the money coming off the books, the Yankees do have money to spend. They are the betting favorites to re-sign Soto, so let’s put him back in the lineup,” Schoenfield suggested, envisioning a retooled Yankee roster. Adding Walker, he wrote, would be a “smart play” to fill the power gap at first base, even if it comes at a cost. Walker is projected to command a three-year, $72 million deal — a manageable figure if Rizzo’s $17 million option (with a $6 million buyout) is declined.
Rizzo himself seems to recognize the uncertainty, saying before Game 4 of the World Series, “I love playing here…But I’m a realist. I’m not naive to it. All that will shape out when the time is right.” His words underscore the weight of this offseason, with the Yankees balancing loyalty to veterans against the pursuit of players like Walker who could reinvigorate their lineup.
Christian Walker’s steady bat would bring much-needed power, especially in Yankee Stadium’s hitter-friendly environment. His .251/.335/.468 slash line with 26 home runs and a 121 OPS+ in 2024 show his value, and his consistent output over the last three seasons makes him a tantalizing option. Should he join Soto, Judge, and a rising Jasson Dominguez, the Yankees could have the lineup to reverse their postseason woes.
The Yankees’ offseason will be one of major decisions and high stakes. Whether they secure Soto and Walker or head in another direction, fans can expect the Yankees to make bold moves to finally get back to the top.
