Oakland Athletics Announce Key Roster Moves Ahead of Offseason
In a strategic roster adjustment, the Pittsburgh Pirates have reclaimed infielder Tristan Gray off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. Gray, originally drafted by the Pirates in the 13th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, returns to Pittsburgh after stints with the Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, and most recently, the Athletics. The 28-year-old has demonstrated versatility across infield positions and brings a left-handed bat to the Pirates’ lineup.
Concurrently, the Athletics have announced the outright removal of right-handed pitcher Austin Adams and infielder Armando Alvarez from their 40-man roster. Adams, a 33-year-old reliever, has previously played for the Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, and Arizona Diamondbacks before joining Oakland.
Alvarez, 29, made his MLB debut with the Athletics in 2024 after signing a minor league contract in November 2023.
These roster moves indicate the Athletics’ intent to refine their lineup and create opportunities for emerging talent as they prepare for the upcoming season. For the Pirates, reclaiming Gray offers a chance to bolster their infield depth with a familiar player who has gained experience across multiple organizations.
