Fernando Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin is set to expire at the end of this year. Reports suggest that the two-time world champion is being considered by Red Bull as a potential replacement for Sergio Perez.
Red Bull has been dominant in Formula 1 in recent years, with a record-breaking campaign in 2023. On the other hand, Aston Martin struggled to secure second place in the standings last season. If Perez fails to impress this year, Red Bull may choose to replace him with Alonso, who is seen as one of the top candidates.
Alonso has had a decent performance in the 2024 season so far. However, after his teammate’s retirement at the Australian GP, he failed to secure a podium finish due to floor damage. With the driver market opening up in 2025, Perez may be at risk of losing his seat next season.
According to F1-insider, Red Bull is currently considering the possibility of hiring F1 veteran Alonso for a seat in Milton Keynes. Although Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has previously expressed openness to Alonso’s return to the team after his victory at Albert Park, this is not the first time Milton Keynes has shown interest in acquiring the 42-year-old driver.
Since joining Aston Martin in 2023, Fernando Alonso has achieved impressive results. As a result, he has developed a strong bond with the team and claims to be loyal to them. Alonso stated that if he were to consider joining another team, Aston Martin would be his first choice due to the support they provided him two years ago. Despite rumors linking him to Mercedes, Alonso has made it clear that he will make the final decision about his future in F1.
Ideally, Alonso would prefer to renew his contract with Aston Martin. However, if the team does not agree to his conditions, he would consider other options. Racing with Aston Martin beyond the end of his contract would be a secondary opportunity for Alonso, as his priority is to continue with Silverstone. He has also set a deadline to make the final decision about his future team in Formula 1.
The 2024 season started decently for Fernando Alonso, despite facing a penalty and being demoted to 8th place in the Australian GP. Aston Martin has shown promising performance since the beginning, and only time will tell how they will fare compared to rival teams.
