A former teammate of Schumacher at Benetton in 1995, Herbert, who is now an expert closely following the F1 scene, made a significant statement. He acknowledges how technology has greatly benefited the current generation of F1 drivers, allowing them to improve their skills in ways that were not possible in the 90s and early 2000s.
During an interview with the media team at Inclave Casino, Herbert confidently stated that Verstappen is superior to Schumacher. He believes this is due to advances in development and human evolution. Although Schumacher had access to simulators during his time, he often felt nauseous when using them. In contrast, Verstappen regularly uses a Red Bull simulator, which has become a crucial tool for modern drivers. Herbert explains that this sixth or seventh sense possessed by these drivers is what leads to constant evolution and improvement. Unlike Schumacher, Verstappen is able to effectively use simulator data in the cockpit.
Verstappen, who is not only the current F1 champion but also excels in the virtual world with numerous victories and records in iRacing, has achieved great success in recent years. Since the beginning of 2022, the 26-year-old Dutch driver has secured an impressive 36 Grand Prix victories. He clinched his third F1 crown well before the end of the last season, despite facing challenges like the “brakes catching fire” issue in 2024.
Herbert emphasizes that, although Red Bull may have the best car, Verstappen’s exceptional skills make all the difference. He, along with drivers like Max, Lewis, Senna, Michael Schumacher, Mike, and Alonso, has the rare ability to consistently extract the best performance from their cars. Herbert acknowledges that Sergio Perez is a talented driver, but is far from Verstappen’s level. In Herbert’s opinion, Verstappen is currently driving at his peak, and there is still more to come from him.
Regarding the criticism that Verstappen’s domination has made F1 boring, Herbert agrees with his former rival and 1997 F1 world champion, Jacques Villeneuve, who rejects these claims.
“When Tiger Woods was at the peak, we appreciated it,” Herbert recalled. “His level of skill was extraordinary. We could witness it and it was captivating to watch every move he made. He was far ahead of the competition.
“Everyone rejoiced in it, and in the same way, they should appreciate Max. He is remarkable. It is the responsibility of the other teams to provide their drivers with a competitive package to challenge him. However, behind Max, there is intense competition among the other drivers, with only a difference of about two or three tenths of a second separating them from eighth or ninth place.
“But there is this person who is incredibly dominant. Roger Federer showed the same dominance at his peak. It is a skill that cannot be underestimated or considered monotonous,” Herbert added.
This weekend in Japan, Verstappen will strive to regain his winning streak. Red Bull is once again the favorite team, but for the first time this season, Ferrari has shown that the world champions are not unbeatable in Australia.
However, it would be imprudent to ignore Herbert’s intuition and bet against Verstappen achieving success on Sunday in Suzuka. He aims to add the trophy of the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix to the 56 F1 winner’s cups he has already accumulated throughout his career in the premier category of motorsport.
