Max Verstappen, representing Red Bull Racing, took the lead early in the race during the Formula 1 World Championship, Round 5, Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, China. The race took place on April 21, 2024. After a two-year absence, the Formula 1 circus returned to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix, which also marked the first Sprint weekend of the season. Despite the challenges faced during the Friday Sprint Shootout, current championship leader Max Verstappen emerged as the winner in both races at the Shanghai International Circuit. While Verstappen dominated the competition, other drivers struggled to navigate through the midfield. Let’s take a closer look at how the field fared upon Formula 1’s return to China.
Verstappen faced some initial difficulties during the Sprint Shootout, where he achieved the fourth fastest time due to challenges in finding grip in challenging conditions. However, he quickly bounced back on Saturday, winning the Sprint race with a 13-second advantage over Lewis Hamilton, who finished second. Verstappen then secured pole position for the Grand Prix, outpacing his teammate Sergio Perez by three tenths of a second. On Sunday, Verstappen maintained a comfortable lead despite two full Safety Car interventions, showcasing his exceptional race management skills.
Perez, on the other hand, faced challenges during the Sprint qualifying and only managed to secure sixth place on the grid. He struggled to make progress during the race, unlike Verstappen, and ended up finishing behind his teammate in third place. Fernando Alonso managed to overtake Perez early on, allowing Verstappen to extend his lead. Although Perez regained his position from Alonso, a Safety Car caused him to lose out to Lando Norris, who managed to avoid the faster Red Bull car.
Norris briefly led the Sprint race after an impressive start, but an error in the opening complex caused him to lose positions. However, he was able to secure a well-deserved second place in the Grand Prix on Sunday, marking the eighth time in his Formula 1 career that he finished in that position. McLaren and Norris took advantage of the Safety Car period to overtake Perez, and Norris skillfully maintained his lead until the end of the race.
Oscar Piastri, in his first visit to China with Formula 1, consistently trailed behind his teammate Norris. Although he faced a momentary issue with the car during the Sprint qualifying, he managed to qualify just a tenth of a second behind Norris for the Grand Prix. Unfortunately, his race was ruined when Daniel Ricciardo’s car collided with his rear diffuser. Despite the damage, Piastri was able to defend his position against Lewis Hamilton.
Charles Leclerc had a reversal of fortunes in China, where he managed to outperform his teammate in both races. Despite the weakness of the Ferrari car during the season, Leclerc secured impressive two fourth places. However, he got involved in a costly battle with his teammate at the start of the Grand Prix, causing both Ferrari cars to drop in the standings. Nevertheless, Leclerc showed strong recovery skills and took advantage of the Safety Car periods to salvage a significant number of points.
Carlos Sainz, who has been performing exceptionally well this season, did not reach his usual high standards during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend. Although slightly outperformed by Leclerc in terms of performance in a single lap and in the race, he still had a strong overall weekend. Sainz faced a high-speed spin during qualifying, but managed to fight back through the pack, earning some points for his efforts. However, understeer issues hindered his progress during the race.
Mercedes continued to face difficulties in the 2024 season, but George Russell managed to extract the most from the W15 car once again. Although he faced disappointment in the Sprint Qualifying due to low tire temperatures, Russell fought back and secured a points-scoring result. Starting in the top ten on Sunday, Russell had a relatively smooth race, finishing in sixth place, which was the best possible result given the limitations of the Mercedes car. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton had a mixed weekend, with a good start in the Sprint race, but a costly mistake during qualifying. Despite starting at the back of the grid, Hamilton showcased his skills by making an excellent comeback and earning some points.
Fernando Alonso reached third place on the grid twice, but struggled to maintain that position during the race. An ambitious attempt to regain a position from Carlos Sainz in the Sprint led to retirement due to a puncture. Although Alonso had a better performance in the Grand Prix, his strategy was compromised by limited tire options. However, he managed to secure an extra point for the fastest lap.
Lance Stroll’s pace deficit compared to Alonso was evident, with him being half a second slower than the Spaniard in the Sprint Qualifying. Stroll provided some excitement with daring overtakes during the Sprint, but ended up finishing in 14th place. He failed to advance to Q3 and was on course for a strong finish in the points until a lack of concentration resulted in a collision with Daniel Ricciardo under the Safety Car. Stroll was penalized for the incident, despite his attempts to blame the Red Bull driver.
Nico Hulkenberg initially struggled with the car setup, resulting in a fruitless first half of the weekend. However, he managed to finish in the top ten in the Grand Prix, benefiting from the collision between Stroll and Ricciardo. Kevin Magnussen’s weekend took a turn for the worse after failing to make a final attempt in qualifying, resulting in an early elimination. He also caused a collision with Yuki Tsunoda, which ended the Red Bull driver’s race and resulted in a penalty from the stewards.
Esteban Ocon benefited from an upgrade on his Alpine car, shedding some weight off the limited A524. Although he was outperformed by Pierre Gasly in the Sprint Shootout, Ocon had a strong race and achieved his best result of the season, finishing in 11th place. Pierre Gasly and Alpine showed signs of promise, despite not receiving the same floor upgrade as Ocon. Gasly advanced to Q2 for the first time this season and matched his best performance of the year, finishing in 13th place. While the overall results may seem average, progress is being made and points are expected in the future.
Williams faced challenges at the Shanghai circuit, with Alexander Albon struggling with tire degradation in the later stages of the race. An early pit stop did little to improve his chances of scoring points, which have been elusive for him this year. Logan Sargeant, in his first Formula 1 weekend in China, finished at the bottom of the pack in all competitive sessions. He had difficulties adapting to the temperamental Williams car, as evidenced by a spin during qualifying.
As the first Chinese driver in Formula 1, Guanyu Zhou received a warm welcome in his home country and had a good performance in the Sprint race for Sauber. However, a lock-up in a slow corner dashed his hopes of advancing to the final stage of qualifying, resulting in an early elimination and a midfield finish in the Grand Prix.
Valtteri Bottas outperformed his teammate in China, securing two top-ten results in qualifying. Unfortunately, both races were marred by misfortunes. In the Sprint, his chances were ruined after sustaining wing damage in a collision with Zhou, and an engine failure prevented him from scoring points on Sunday.
After a difficult start to the season, Daniel Ricciardo finally surpassed his teammate Yuki Tsunoda in China. Ricciardo credited a new chassis for his improved performance and had high hopes for the weekend. However, a collision with Stroll under Safety Car conditions prematurely ended his race. He also received a grid penalty for the Miami Grand Prix after overtaking Hulkenberg under the Safety Car.
Yuki Tsunoda faced difficulties throughout the China Grand Prix weekend and consistently lagged behind Ricciardo, despite initially having the edge against his more experienced teammate. His first Formula 1 race in China was hampered by setup concerns and lack of grip, and his Grand Prix was cut short when he was involved in a collision with Kevin Magnussen’s Haas.
