In an impressive display, he outperformed his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, by a significant margin at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Lando Norris expressed concerns that Max Verstappen’s dominant streak in Formula 1 may discourage fans.
Verstappen has been unstoppable this season, securing his fifth consecutive pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix.
In an exceptional performance, he outperformed his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, by a considerable margin at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Since his dramatic victory over Lewis Hamilton in Abu Dhabi in 2021, Verstappen has won most of the races and is on track to secure his fourth consecutive title.
Toto Wolff, head of the Mercedes team, has already admitted that catching Verstappen this season seems unlikely.
Before the Chinese Grand Prix, Norris, who has a close relationship with Verstappen off the track, expressed a critical perspective on the current state of the sport.
“It’s frustrating for the viewers, but it’s always been like this.
“Now, we’re witnessing more domination than ever, so it will never be the most exciting to watch, and the only exciting races were those without Max,” Norris said.
He also acknowledged the potential negative impact on fan engagement, stating: “Of course. Of course.
“There’s no denying it.
“If you see the same driver winning every time without a challenge, it starts to get boring, and that’s obvious.”
Norris highlighted Verstappen’s exceptional skills and the circumstances contributing to his success: “You have one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers in one of the most dominant cars, and it’s a lethal combination.
“If Max wasn’t there and you had two Sergio Perezes, it wouldn’t be the same.”
Verstappen demonstrated his skill in the sprint race on Saturday, initially falling behind but spectacularly overtaking Hamilton and finishing with a significant advantage.
Fernando Alonso was the closest competitor not in a Red Bull car during qualifying, but he was nearly half a second behind.
Reflecting on the current competitive landscape, Norris was not surprised by Red Bull’s leadership.
“Am I surprised by how far ahead Red Bull is?
“No.
“When you understand how difficult it is to get it right, then it makes sense.
“They are just smart individuals,” he explained.
Despite hopes for a more level playing field, Norris acknowledged the challenge of catching up to Red Bull.
Mercedes is in a slump, far from their previous dominant form, with Hamilton starting in 18th place and George Russell in eighth at the Chinese Grand Prix.
Norris, who qualified in fourth place, commented on Mercedes’ decline: “Considering how dominant Mercedes was in the past, you would expect more from them.
“I certainly did, especially considering how much they have claimed in recent years: ‘oh, now we’ve got this’, and they never seem to have.”
He added: “We’ve experienced this before, where we’ve encountered another obstacle, so it’s tough.
“But they were almost more competitive last year than they are now, and you just wouldn’t expect that from them. But it shows how complex this sport can be.”
