Days in Imola that are remembered as some of the darkest in Formula 1 history. During Saturday’s qualifying session, a tragic incident occurred when the front wing of Ratzenberger’s Simtek, 33, broke, causing him to crash into the barrier at a speed of 300 km/h. Unfortunately, the driver lost his life instantly.
Immediately after the accident, Ayrton Senna, a three-time F1 world champion, arrived at the scene and was visibly shaken by the unfolding events. He was seen talking to F1 doctor Sid Watkins, who was a close friend. Given the Brazilian’s emotional state, the doctor suggested that Senna should retire immediately from racing.
However, Senna chose not to follow the doctor’s advice. Tragically, the next day, Dr. Sid was unable to save Senna when he suffered a serious accident at Tamburello during Sunday’s race. Senna, who was leading the race at that time, was found injured in the cockpit of his Williams car. This devastating incident occurred on May 1, 1994, marking a dark day in F1 history, three decades ago.
In a span of 24 hours, the sport witnessed the loss of two lives, depriving F1 of one of its biggest stars at the time. Given their different levels of fame on an international scale, it was inevitable that Senna’s death overshadowed Roland’s.
It is important to highlight that Senna, at 34, was already a living legend at the time, having won 41 Grand Prix races in his ten seasons in the top tier of motorsport. On the other hand, Ratzenberger, who was a year younger, was just trying to qualify for his second race in F1.
Jacques Villeneuve, whose father Gilles Villeneuve, a legend of F1 and Ferrari, tragically passed away when Jacques was just ten years old, shared a special bond with Ratzenberger. In an interview with the Online Casino media team, Villeneuve fondly remembered Ratzenberger as an older brother figure: “I have great memories of Roland. He was always there for me. He played a significant role in my time in Japan. We were both racing in the Japanese Formula 3000 for Toyota. He was a lot of fun and not the type to live in Tokyo.”
Villeneuve continued: “He used to drive to Tokyo to party with us and then sleep in his car because he couldn’t drive back! He had an old-fashioned approach to life and believed in enjoying every moment. When I saw him make it to F1, I was thrilled for him. It was truly amazing, especially considering he was in his 30s, which is relatively late for a driver.” Villeneuve began his first season in Indycar in 1994.
Reflecting on that tragic day of April 30, 1994, which marked Roland’s final race, Villeneuve expressed his sorrow: “I believe it was only Roland’s third race. It was an incredibly difficult weekend, filled with sadness in every aspect. What hurts the most is that every year, at this time, people ask me about Senna’s death anniversary. I would tell them that I didn’t know Senna personally, but I knew Ratzenberger. Their response was often dismissive, saying they only cared about Senna.” These words were shared by the 53-year-old Canadian.
“I replied: I am worried about Ratzenberger, he was my teammate, he is the one I care about. I still find it very distressing today. Suddenly, Senna was seen as a significant loss, but it seems that Ratzenberger was not. That’s how most media individuals portray it and I find it terrible,” expressed the 53-year-old Canadian, reflecting on the tragic events.
Villeneuve continued: “This demonstrates how absurd all of this was. People claim that their deaths were a great loss to F1. No, they were a great loss to the families who need to mourn. The loss of Ratzenberger was as significant as that of Senna.
“For me, Ratzenberger was the biggest loss because he was a friend. I was watching the weekend on television. It is still vivid in my memory. Two deceased drivers, accidents in the pit lane and at the start. It was just unfortunate. Things got worse in a period of 48 hours.”
I have experienced the loss of different people in racing, so I become emotionally distant and insensitive. It started with the death of my father. After Roland, I developed a strong bond with Greg Moore and then he tragically passed away [in an accident in Indycar in 1999], which made me hesitant to form close relationships with drivers.
“You simply become emotionally distant as a form of self-defense. You don’t show your emotions and keep everything bottled up inside,” added Villeneuve, who has a unique perspective on the experience of losing a loved one in the sport you love so much.
Ironically, Roland suffered the accident and lost his life in what is called the Variante Villeneuve, in honor of Jacques’ father and F1 legend Gilles Villeneuve. This occurred on April 20, 1994, at 1:15 p.m., Imola time.

In the second half, Brazil took the lead again with a goal from Gabriel Jesus at the 60th minute. It seemed like they were about to clinch the title, but Germany didn’t give up. At the 80th minute, they equalized again with a goal from Werner.
With the draw persisting in extra time, the decision went to penalties. Both teams managed to convert their first three penalties, but Brazil faltered on the fourth. The German goalkeeper made an incredible save, giving Germany the chance to win the match. They didn’t waste the opportunity and scored the decisive goal.
It was an exciting final, with plenty of action and twists. Both teams played with a lot of passion and determination, but in the end, Germany emerged victorious. They showed why they are one of the best teams in the world.
