The three-time Formula 1 champion dominated the session with an impressive single lap on soft tires, after spending most of the time doing longer runs. Oscar Piastri, in the updated McLaren, finished second, while Lando Norris had issues with the hydraulic steering in the sister car. Carlos Sainz was the only Ferrari driver in the session, as Charles Leclerc spun and couldn’t continue due to an overheated clutch.
Adrian Newey’s decision to leave the team after 19 years created a frenzy in the Formula 1 paddock. This became the main topic of discussion for the Miami GP, overshadowing race news during the second weekend of the Sprint season.
Mercedes and McLaren introduced upgrade packages for this weekend’s race. Mercedes hopes their upgrades will help find better performance, while McLaren brings their first significant update of the season. Ferrari is using a blue livery this weekend, and fans hope their performance will not be disappointing as it was in China.
Pirelli brought the C2 (hard), C3 (medium), and C4 (soft) tire compounds for this race. They chose these intermediate options for the smooth and low-grip Miami circuit. Track evolution will play a crucial role in the second weekend of the Sprint calendar.
The session started with clear and sunny conditions, with a track temperature of 48 degrees Celsius and an air temperature of 28 degrees. Red Bull made a revision to their floor edge to reduce weight, while Mercedes brought a larger upgrade package for this weekend.
A McLaren went all out with its updates, making changes to the front wing, front suspension, front brake duct and winglet, floor bodywork, sidepod inlet, bodywork, engine cover, and radiator opening cooling arrangement. Aston Martin also made significant changes to its car, including a new front wing, revised engine cover, rear wing, beam wing, and chassis scoop for cooling.
In a significant development, Williams finally brought its reserve chassis. Sauber introduced new front and rear wings, while Haas debuted a new floor.
The first practice session is underway in Miami for the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.
In this exclusive practice session before the Sprint qualifying, Magnussen was the first driver out on track, wasting no time. However, Norris quickly reported that something was wrong with his McLaren. He found it harder to turn right than left. As a result, he had to return to the pits.
Piastri also had steering issues with his MCL38, but it was just heavy in both directions. Leclerc caused a yellow flag when he spun at Turn 16 and ended up facing the wrong way. He struggled to execute a multi-step maneuver to correct his direction. Unfortunately, the clutch on his SF-24 overheated, preventing him from engaging reverse gear. This marked the end of Leclerc’s session, which certainly was not an ideal start to his weekend.
The yellow flag eventually turned into a red flag, prompting Leclerc to switch off his car and exit. This incident created a blockage on the track, causing a delay. After the track was cleared, the session resumed with less than 45 minutes remaining. The drivers lined up in the pitlane, eager to make the most of the limited practice time.
During the session, replays showed Tsunoda and Sargeant facing blocks, but managing to keep control of their cars. Norris, on the other hand, continued to report issues with the steering of his car. McLaren CEO, Zak Brown, explained that Norris was dealing with an asymmetric power steering hydraulic assistance issue, not related to any upgrades. They made some adjustments during the session to temporarily improve it and planned to fix it later.
Verstappen also had a lock-up and ended up in the run-off area at Turn 17. However, he quickly recovered and continued his session. Meanwhile, Leclerc, clearly unhappy with his earlier setback, watched the session from the Ferrari pit box.
Another replay revealed Verstappen struggling at Turns 14 and 15, followed by another lock-up at Turn 17. He informed his team that he was facing fast front locking at the peak of his braking.
With less than 15 minutes remaining, Hamilton failed to navigate through Turns 14/15 and went straight on. Albon had his own moment on track, facing rear locks at Turns 4 and 1 in his Williams. Verstappen also encountered difficulties at Turn 7 when a gust of wind pushed him wide.
As the final ten minutes approached, teams switched to soft tires for qualifying runs. The report is still ongoing and more updates will be provided.
