German tennis star Alexander Zverev found it hard to believe that his joke about replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes would actually come true. After the news broke that Hamilton would be switching to Ferrari in the 2025 season, Zverev shared a video where he introduced himself as Mercedes’ reserve driver. The video was originally featured in an episode of Netflix’s BreakPoint, titled ‘Unfinished Business’, which showcased Zverev’s story.
Following the announcement of Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes, Zverev shared the video and expressed his astonishment that his joke had become a reality. He even joked about being ready to join the Mercedes F1 team. Interestingly, the post was liked by Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc.
Although Zverev may not be able to join the Mercedes F1 team, he is performing well in his own sport. He had a strong start to the 2024 season, helping his team win the United Cup. Zverev also had a successful run at the Australian Open, defeating Dominic Koepfer, Lukas Klein, and Alex Michelsen in the earlier rounds. However, he faced tougher challenges in the later stages of the tournament. Despite a tough match against Cameron Norrie in the fourth round, Zverev emerged victorious in five sets. He then faced Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals and maintained his impressive head-to-head record against the Spaniard by winning in four sets. Unfortunately, Zverev’s journey was halted in the semifinals by Daniil Medvedev, and his quest for a maiden Grand Slam title remained unfulfilled.
