Alfa Romeo has finally unveiled the highly anticipated compact SUV Milano, the first fully electric model from the Italian brand and the smallest SUV in the range.
The new Milano was designed to be the sportiest model in the segment, especially in the top-of-the-range Veloce variant, which offers 240 hp and a more refined chassis configuration.
Alfa Romeo’s first 100% electric model comes with an electric motor with two power levels, 156 or 240 hp in the case of the Veloce variant, which is powered by a 54 kWh battery that the Italian brand claims offers high energy density. Specifically, in the 156 hp version, the lithium-ion battery announces a range of 410 kilometers in the WLTP cycle or 590 km in urban cycle.
When it comes to charging, the Milano can be recharged at DC fast charging stations of 100 kW, needing less than 30 minutes to charge the battery from 10 to 80%. The Milano Speciale, exclusively limited to the launch edition, embodies sportiness, technology, and comfort in a unique configuration that includes a selection of the best specifications offered by the range, it is also equipped with an onboard three-phase 11 kW charger to ensure the best charging performance in all situations.
In addition to the 100% electric versions, the Milano will be available with a hybrid version, with front-wheel drive, or Q4 all-wheel drive. The hybrid variant makes use of a 48-V Hybrid VGT hybrid architecture with 136 hp. The internal combustion engine is a three-cylinder, 1.2-liter engine that operates according to the Miller cycle and is equipped with a variable geometry turbo and chain-driven distribution for maximum reliability.
The electrical component is composed of a 48 Volt lithium-ion battery and a 21 kW electric motor integrated into the 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which works together with the inverter and transmission control unit to ensure maximum efficiency.
Alfa Romeo emphasized that the hybrid Milano allows for a smooth driving experience for city driving in electric mode for more than 50% of the time.
The Alfa Romeo Milano range will include the Ellettrica, Ellettrica Veloce, and Ibrida versions. The Milano Ellettrica Veloce is the top of the range, with a single electric motor with 240 hp. Power is transmitted to the front axle, with the help of a mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential.
The specific chassis setup of the Veloce includes “the most direct steering in the segment” with a ratio of 14.6. The sport suspension has been lowered by 25 mm compared to other versions of the new Alfa Romeo SUV and is combined with front and rear stabilizer bars. The braking system uses 380 mm discs and four-piston monobloc calipers at the front.
Aesthetically, the exterior of the new Milano is marked by the front section and the luminous signature with “3+3” Full LED Matrix adaptive headlights. The scudetto grille is partially covered and the front bumper is inspired by the Quadrifoglio versions of the Giulia and Stelvio, featuring generous air intakes and an integrated splitter.
The profile of the Milano highlights the toned rear shoulders, as well as the 20” wheels, while in the rear section, Alfa Romeo designers opted for a “kamm tail” finish, in reference to the Giulia TZ.
The new Milano presents itself with compact dimensions, namely 4.17 meters in length, 1.78 meters in width, and 1.5 meters in height, encompassing the uniqueness of the original and modern Made in Italy design from the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile, typical of the brand, which boasts a strong identity, composed of a limited number of elements that include the legendary shield, in the Leggenda and Progresso variants, perhaps the most famous and recognizable signature in the automotive world.
The same inspiration can be found in the interior where great attention has been paid to details, the use of the best materials, and placing all controls within reach of the driver, with a compact steering wheel to adapt to all driving styles.
Also noteworthy is the instrument panel with its iconic “telescopic” design featuring a 10.25″ fully digital TFT screen, providing access to the car’s data and driving technology settings.
Already in the center of the dashboard and oriented towards the driver, there is a 10.25″ touchscreen system developed to work with widgets, with graphic components designed for intuitive interaction with all functions, which can be customized through a simple and quick drag and drop movement. In addition, the Milano is equipped with Sabelt sports seats with a wraparound backrest that combines high mechanical resistance, ergonomics, and structural lightness.
Regarding storage, the Milano features a 400-liter trunk accessible through hands-free technology, along with a convenient storage compartment for charging cables, in the 100% electric version, located under the hood.
To further increase comfort, the Milano offers a range of driver assistance features to help with longitudinal and lateral vehicle control (level 2 autonomous driving). Along with the 360° parking sensors, the 180° rear camera monitors the surrounding area to provide an innovative and practical semi-autonomous parking system. Additionally, the Milano can also include proximity access technology to quickly and easily open and close the car.
In terms of connectivity, the integration of the Hey Alfa virtual assistant and ChatGPT (A.I.) stands out, using voice recognition to provide a useful and discreet “co-pilot” for information, advice, and meeting all the driver’s needs during travels.
Alfa Romeo has announced that orders for the Milano will begin in Portugal next May, when the Italian brand will reveal the prices for the national market of the new SUV.
