Lewis Hamilton, the most successful driver in Mercedes’ history, has announced a surprising move to Ferrari in 2025. This decision comes after an incredible 12 years with Mercedes, during which Hamilton won six world championships. Despite Mercedes’ recent improvement, they have not been able to challenge for the championship title since 2021 and have struggled against Red Bull.
According to Mercedes trackside engineer Andrew Shovlin, Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari was motivated by his desire to start a new chapter in his career. Shovlin believes that Hamilton, who is now 39 years old, sees this move as an opportunity to fulfill his dream of driving for Ferrari and hopes to achieve more victories and potentially another championship in the coming years.
In recent races, Mercedes has shown significant progress and has closed the gap to McLaren and Red Bull. They have earned an impressive 170 points in the last six races and have secured three victories. Shovlin attributes this improvement to the team’s ability to fine-tune the setup of their W15 car early in the race weekends. Initially, the team struggled to make stable changes while maintaining balance, which affected their performance. However, since their upgrades in Montreal, the W15 has demonstrated stability across different tracks and conditions.
Looking ahead, Mercedes aims to continue their upward trajectory and make up for the points they lost at the beginning of the 2024 season.
