Debut of Young Mercedes Driver in Test Amid Seat Speculations in 2025
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a promising 17-year-old driver, successfully completed his first Formula 1 test with Mercedes in Austria. The test fueled rumors that Antonelli is being considered as a possible replacement for Lewis Hamilton, who will move to Ferrari next season. Antonelli has been part of the Mercedes Junior Team since 2018 and has made significant progress in his career, moving from the Formula Regional European Championship to Formula 2. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff confirmed earlier this month that Antonelli would have the opportunity to drive an F1 car for the first time at the Red Bull Ring, the location of the Austrian Grand Prix.
Antonelli’s test was conducted using the 2021 title-winning W12 car, in accordance with regulations. Wolff had previously expressed the team’s intention to allow Antonelli to experience a competitive machine, especially given Mercedes’ struggles since the rule changes in 2022. The test was scheduled for two days at the Red Bull Ring, but the first day was interrupted by an unexpected snowstorm, forcing the team to suspend their planned program. However, the second day proved successful, with Antonelli completing several laps.
In a video shared by Mercedes on their social media, Antonelli expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. He described the experience as amazing and stated that he enjoyed every second. Despite the initial setback caused by the snow, Antonelli thanked the team for their hard work and expressed his anticipation for what is to come.
Wolff also revealed that Antonelli will have more opportunities to test an F1 car in the coming months. The team is carefully evaluating his skills and potential for a promotion to Formula 1 next season. The plan for Antonelli’s involvement in Formula 1 has been in place for some time and has not undergone significant changes in recent weeks. Additional test days have been added, but it is still to be determined whether Antonelli will be driving a Formula 1 car next year.
