Barcelona has never hidden its desire to reunite with Lionel Messi, but this time the invitation is for a different reason. As the club prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary on November 29, they plan to invite Messi and other legends to commemorate the iconic figures in the club’s history. However, the reunion won’t be on the pitch, but rather at an event marking the milestone of the club’s 1899 foundation.
The challenge for Messi lies in timing. The event falls right in the middle of Inter Miami’s potential MLS Cup playoff run. If Miami makes it deep into the playoffs, which includes the hope of securing a spot in the MLS Cup final, Messi would find it nearly impossible to travel to Europe and return in time to maintain his form and focus. With the stakes so high for Miami, participating in Barcelona’s anniversary gala could prove difficult. However, the club has offered a solution: if Messi and other legends are unable to attend in person, they will have the opportunity to send recorded video messages to be played at the event.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made it no secret that he was eager to bring Messi back as a player when the Argentinian star left Paris Saint-Germain last year. However, Messi decided against rejoining the Catalan side, citing concerns about the club’s unstable financial situation, which had previously led to his disappointing exit in 2021 after a failed contract renewal. Messi, not wanting to face another heartbreak, opted for a fresh start with Inter Miami in the MLS.
Messi’s focus remains firmly on Inter Miami’s historic season. After finishing 27th overall in 2023, the team has achieved a stunning turnaround, winning the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and positioning themselves as strong contenders for the MLS Cup. The regular season concludes with key fixtures against Toronto FC and New England Revolution, and if Miami can secure four playoff wins, they would clinch their first-ever MLS Cup.
As Messi looks to make history with Miami, the club’s aspirations may prevent him from attending Barcelona’s anniversary event in person. But no matter the outcome, Messi’s legacy with Barcelona will always remain intertwined with the club’s storied past, and his presence—whether in person or via video—will be a fitting tribute to his extraordinary contributions.
