At the end of his Formula 1 qualifying debut, Ollie Bearman expressed his apologies to his Ferrari team. However, there was no need to apologize. In response, his race engineer Riccardo Adami quickly acknowledged that Bearman had performed well in a challenging and stressful session. Although Bearman failed to reach the top 10, his performance can hardly be considered a failure. Considering his circumstances – being only 18 years old, replacing Carlos Sainz last minute, never having driven this car before, and competing on a difficult and fast street circuit – Ferrari was cautious not to set high expectations or impose specific goals. Team principal Fred Vasseur stated that he would be more than satisfied if Bearman could complete a clean lap.
The qualifying session was not without its challenges, although Bearman cannot be solely blamed for them. In Q1, his final lap was compromised when Fernando Alonso overtook him in the last corner, and Ferrari could have provided better assistance to Bearman in that situation. Furthermore, his first flying lap in Q2 was interrupted by a red flag caused by Nico Hulkenberg’s stopped Haas. His second attempt in Q2 was abandoned due to an error in sector one, which was a recurring issue during qualifying as Bearman struggled with the entry into the track’s toughest corners. He experienced some understeer and went slightly off the ideal racing line. As a result, his lap was ruined.
It became evident that Bearman was an inexperienced pilot dealing with a disorganized session, struggling to put everything together when pushed to the limit. However, when he finally managed to complete a lap at the end of Q2, it was solid but not exceptional. This left room for improvement on his final attempt after a cool-down lap. Unfortunately, with the best performance already extracted from the tires, Bearman faced a tough battle. Nevertheless, he did his best. Falling just under half a second short of a place in Q3, he finished only half a second behind Charles Leclerc and six tenths behind the fastest driver, Max Verstappen. This was an impressive result by any measure. Despite the session threatening to slip from his grasp, Bearman remained calm and delivered a strong lap when it mattered most.
Bearman admitted to making a mistake by setting his best lap on his second attempt. His first lap was a bit messy in Sector 3, resulting in a significant time loss. He acknowledged that the differences between drivers are incredibly small and even small improvements can make a difference. He expressed some disappointment with the final result, believing he could have achieved more. However, considering the circumstances, coming so close to the top was a commendable effort that puts him in a good position for the race and the opportunity to score points.
Ultimately, Vasseur’s hope for Bearman was to have a drama-free and incident-free session. Bearman stated that he received advice to not be a hero, and he followed that advice. He never seemed out of place, kept control, and his pace was not the issue. He did not appear overwhelmed by the situation and even mentioned that not having time to dwell on the gravity of the circumstances may have worked in his favor.
In other words, Formula 1 is an exceptionally challenging sport, especially for young and inexperienced drivers who are new to a car and thrown into a qualifying session with little practice time. Bearman demonstrated remarkable skill in dealing with these challenges. Some minor hiccups along the way were expected, considering the non-linear nature of progress. Making a few mistakes during qualifying laps, especially after only having one practice simulation, is completely understandable and not a cause for concern.
The fact that Bearman’s final effort fell slightly short of reaching Q3 is of little importance compared to his overall high-quality performance and readiness for F1. Now, he has an excellent opportunity to showcase his skills in the race. If he continues on his current trajectory and maintains a clear mindset, he has the potential to achieve great results. Bearman’s goal for the race is to avoid making mistakes, gradually build his experience, and hopefully score some points in the end.
