In recent years, Formula 1 has been moving towards sustainability. Their Net Zero 2030 initiative, along with the introduction of hybrid power units in 2014, has propelled them forward. These power units now boast an unmatched thermal efficiency of 50% compared to any other engine in the world.
During an exclusive interview with GrandPrix247 and AFP at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, Ben Sulayem was asked about F1’s progress in the areas of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG). He emphasized the importance of looking beyond the engine when discussing sustainability. He highlighted the need to address factors like tires, brakes, and fuel consumption. Sulayem stressed the importance of science, common sense, and technology in improving these aspects of the sport.
F1 has faced criticism for its global presence and the environmental impact of transporting equipment around the world. However, Ben Sulayem expressed satisfaction with the efforts made by the Formula One Management (FOM) in organizing the sport’s calendar. He acknowledged the improvements made in terms of logistics and the sport itself. The coordination between the FIA and FOM in developing a more sustainable calendar was praised.
Currently, the FIA and FOM are working to finalize the regulations for 2026 for F1. While the power unit has already been defined, the aerodynamic aspect is still under discussion and raising questions. Ben Sulayem emphasized the importance of achieving a minimum 75% improvement in aerodynamics, as it does not depend solely on the engine or hybrid technology. He stressed that continuous improvement is necessary and that the FIA and its partners are committed to this ongoing process.
Ben Sulayem emphasized that the focus was not on electrification, but on achieving the sustainability goals of F1. He highlighted the issue of heavy F1 cars, explaining that the weight makes it harder for drivers to control and increases the risk of accidents. The regulations for the new specification will take this into consideration.
Another topic of discussion was the sound of the engines. Ben Sulayem expressed the desire for Formula 1 to have a better sound and mentioned consulting teams, engine manufacturers, and UP manufacturers to address this.
He emphasized the importance of avoiding complacency and continuously seeking more sustainability and efficiency. With rapid advances in technology, new ideas and considerations arise that were previously ignored.
Ben Sulayem mentioned that some car manufacturers are exploring alternative methods to achieve their goals, indicating that electrification is not the only solution. He also raised concerns about the use and disposal of lithium batteries in electric mobility.
In conclusion, Ben Sulayem called for collaboration between FOM, teams, and the FIA to improve the future of F1. He emphasized that it is a collective responsibility and that the focus should be on the new generation, not just the present.
