The plastics industry is making a dangerous push to roll back the progress we’ve made in tackling the plastic pollution crisis. With the “Accelerating a Circular Economy for Plastics and Recycling Innovation Act”, the industry aims to flood the nation with more incinerated plastic, loosening vital environmental protections.
This bill, disguised as a solution, promotes so-called “advanced recycling” – a practice that burns plastic waste under the guise of recycling. Yet, this is nothing more than a pollution nightmare, releasing nearly 100 harmful pollutants, including carcinogens, into the air we breathe. Worse, the bill seeks to rebrand incineration, dodging Clean Air Act protections and labeling packaging as “recycled” even when it’s not.
It’s a calculated move to gut local and state efforts to regulate plastic waste, nullifying the bans on single-use plastics that have helped millions of Americans. This bill not only undermines environmental laws but also perpetuates plastic pollution, ensuring the industry continues to profit at the planet’s expense.
We must act now to defeat this bill and protect our future from Big Plastic’s toxic grip.
