In a bold and unexpected shift, the Toronto Blue Jays have announced the hiring of former Minnesota Twins hitting coach David Popkins. The 34-year-old, who spent the last three seasons with the Twins, is bringing his expertise north of the border as part of the Blue Jays’ revamped coaching staff for 2025.
Popkins, known for his analytical approach to hitting, is one of four coaches Minnesota will not be bringing back as they look to reshape their own lineup. Alongside him, hitting coach Rudy Hernandez, assistant hitting coach Derek Shomon, and assistant bench/infield coach Tony Diaz are also out, marking the end of an era in Minnesota.
This hire signals the Blue Jays’ commitment to shaking things up after a disappointing 2024 season. Popkins’ tenure with the Twins saw the team fluctuate in offensive output, but his ability to nurture young talent, especially power hitters, has been widely recognized.
Stay tuned as Toronto prepares for what promises to be an intense offseason!
