Valtteri Bottas has revealed that he could potentially continue his Formula 1 career with Sauber. While he acknowledges that staying with the team is an option, he also emphasizes the importance of being in a team that respects him. Sauber’s decision to sign Nico Hulkenberg from Haas as they transition into an Audi setup in 2025 means that one of their current drivers will be replaced. Previously, Sauber/Audi had considered a completely new driver lineup, with Carlos Sainz as a top choice. However, Sainz’s decision to join Williams has forced Sauber to reconsider their options.
Bottas had hoped to take Sainz’s seat at Williams, but with that opportunity gone and Alpine set to announce Jack Doohan as Esteban Ocon’s replacement, Bottas’ only chance of staying on the grid seems to be with Sauber. The team has recently undergone a change in leadership, with former Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto taking charge. Bottas believes that Binotto’s arrival will affect his discussions with Sauber and hopes for a resolution on his future before the season resumes. He admits that the uncertainty can become nerve-racking if it drags on after the August break.
Bottas also believes that Sauber’s planned transition to Audi has had a negative impact on their performance this season, as they are the only team yet to score any points. Despite this, Bottas is open to extending his relationship with the team beyond this season if it is a feasible option. However, he warns that he wants to be in an environment where he is respected and appreciated for his abilities and contributions to the team.
