Carlos Alcaraz is currently the top player in the world, although he is ranked behind Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic in the ATP standings. The young Spanish player made it to the final of the Paris Olympics without dropping a set and will begin tomorrow as the favorite against 24-time Grand Slam champion Nole Djokovic.
The 21-year-old from Murcia is possibly playing the best tennis of his career and will be aiming to add another title to his collection after winning both the French Open and Wimbledon. While the Olympic tournament doesn’t award ATP points, winning the gold medal is a tremendous accomplishment for any athlete.
The former world number 1 has raised his game as the tournament has progressed and put on a flawless performance against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals. Alcaraz didn’t give the Canadian player any chances, winning convincingly with a score of 6-1, 6-1, much to the disappointment of the fans.
The Spanish champion will attempt to finish the job tomorrow against an opponent who has been chasing Olympic gold for a long time and has made history in the sport. Djokovic has experienced many disappointments at the Olympics throughout his career, but this time he will give everything to rewrite his story.
Despite only starting his career a few years ago, Carlos Alcaraz has already broken numerous records and achieved many prestigious successes. According to reputable sources like MARCA, Alcaraz’s net worth is estimated to be around 14-15 million dollars.
Following his easy victory over Auger-Aliassime, Alcaraz expressed his confidence in winning the gold medal: “In the end, it’s a final, a very important moment in my life and career, and for all Spaniards as well. We’re going to try not to dwell on its significance, but rather treat it as just another match. Our goal from the beginning of the week and the year was to win gold, not just a medal, but gold. We already have the medal guaranteed, so we’re going to enjoy this final and make it a special moment for my team, my family, and myself. I appreciate the support of the many Spanish fans at home, and I will give them what they want, which is gold.”
Alcaraz will aim to replicate his incredible performance from the Wimbledon final. On that occasion, he didn’t let Djokovic escape and won in three clean sets. The Spaniard played one of the best matches of his career in London, with only a slight lapse in concentration towards the end of the third set.
Former WTA No.1 Ash Barty commented on Alcaraz’s current level during an extensive interview with Stan Sport: “What is impressive is that he has the potential to improve even more. Physically, he’s incredible, and to be so young and already such a complete athlete is remarkable. His tennis game is impressive, but there’s still so much more for him to learn. It’s scary to think that he already has four Grand Slam titles and has been ranked number 1 in the world, yet there’s still so much more room for growth. When he figures it out and puts all the pieces together, his potential is truly frightening.”
According to MARCA, Juan Carlos Ferrero may travel to Paris to watch the Olympic final in person. Ferrero’s presence could provide valuable assistance to Alcaraz in his match against Djokovic, especially considering the young age of the Spanish player. Ferrero was absent from Paris this week to spend time with his family after Wimbledon. It was recently announced that he will also miss the upcoming Masters 1000 in Montreal.
Alcaraz won’t be the only top player missing from the Canadian tournament. Djokovic, Musetti, de Minaur, Struff, and others will also be absent. The favorite to win in Canada will be Jannik Sinner, who skipped the Paris Olympics due to tonsillitis and will aim to defend the 1000 points he earned in Toronto last year. Alcaraz is expected to participate in the Cincinnati Masters 1000, which will take place the following week and serve as the final test before the US Open.
