In a fiery exchange on The Breakfast Club, radio host Charlamagne tha God couldn’t hold back his laughter when Lara Trump claimed her father-in-law, former President Donald Trump, wasn’t racist and had actually been beneficial to the Black community during his time in the White House.
Charlamagne, whose real name is Lenard McKelvey, had the Republican National Committee co-chair on his show just weeks after hosting a town hall with Vice President Kamala Harris. The conversation took a sharp turn when co-host DJ Envy asked Lara to address the longstanding accusations of racism against Trump, citing lawsuits for housing discrimination and his infamous role in the Central Park Five case.
Lara vehemently denied the accusations, insisting, “There was never any proof of anything… Donald Trump was really beneficial to the Black community when he was in the White House.” This assertion caused Charlamagne to break into laughter, prompting Lara to snap back, “Why is that funny?”
“It’s hysterical,” Charlamagne responded, pointing out that the public is well aware of Trump’s controversial statements thanks to the internet and media. Despite her attempts to paint Trump as a friend to the Black community, Charlamagne couldn’t take the claim seriously, especially when Lara mentioned Trump’s relationships with figures like Jesse Jackson.
The back-and-forth highlighted the ongoing divide over Trump’s legacy, with Lara defending him against accusations of racism and Charlamagne questioning how anyone could overlook his inflammatory rhetoric, particularly regarding immigrants. “People act like there’s no such thing as Google or they don’t have TV,” he quipped.
The fiery exchange underscores the deep political and social tensions as both sides grapple with how to interpret Trump’s impact on race relations in America.
