Car exports from China increased by 63.7% in 2023, while domestic sales increased by 4.2%. Data revealed by the Chinese Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows that car sales in China totaled 21.9 million vehicles in 2023, while exports increased to 4.1 million units.
Data from the Chinese Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows that the increase in exports may cause China to surpass Japan as the world’s largest exporter of automobiles, which exported 3.6 million automobiles in the first 11 months of the year, as the final count is scheduled for January 31.
A strong increase in sales to Russia helped boost China’s exports in 2023. China exported 840,000 vehicles to Russia in the first 11 months of last year, including trucks and buses, as well as cars.
Data revealed by the China Passenger Car Association showed that electric vehicles accounted for 24% of new model sales in the country in 2023. If hybrid models are included, the share of new energy-powered vehicles in total sales reached 36% last year.
According to the same data, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling 100% electric car in China last year, with 646,800 units sold, followed by the BYD Song with 428,600 units.
