Even teams with strong aerodynamics may struggle with this challenge. Mercedes, in particular, is known to have inconsistent control over their ground effect. As a result, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some cars going off track and ruining their qualifying laps.
Discovering a bump on the track at the wrong moment can have a big impact on a car’s downforce. In recent years, we have witnessed several accidents where a car suddenly lost grip for no apparent reason. These incidents are often caused by uneven surfaces, which require certain parts of the track to be leveled. The introduction of new asphalt, combined with low grip and lack of data, adds an extra layer of tension for the teams on the pit wall. This is especially true for Williams, who already face challenges with the absence of a spare chassis.
Carlos Sainz seems to have been treated unfairly. With the news that Fernando Alonso has secured a spot at Aston Martin until 2025, there are few places on the grid that truly deserve Sainz’s talent. However, the statement “Mercedes will solve their performance problems” seems to be losing credibility. Throughout this season, the W15 has consistently ranked between the fourth and fifth fastest car on the grid.
Interestingly, this arrangement could benefit both parties involved. Once the adults take over at Sauber in 2026, Carlos will likely move to Audi, and it seems that young Mercedes talent Kimi Antonelli needs more time in the F2 “oven” than previously anticipated by Toto Wolff.
Previously, I hinted that the results in Shanghai may be different from the first three stages. This is because the track lacks slow corners that lead to long straights. This combination has favored the RB 20, as its advanced suspension allows it to maintain momentum in these corners and, consequently, achieve higher speeds on the straights.
As rival aerodynamic programs quickly approach, Red Bull’s advantage on this track is gradually diminishing. Coupled with the Sprint weekend format and reduced training time, there is an opportunity for a team not belonging to Red Bull to secure the front row and the win. Personally, I believe that McLaren has a good chance in the Sprint race, while Ferrari may stand out in the Feature/Grand Prix/Long Race.
