Sergio Perez achieved an impressive result by qualifying on the front row alongside pole position Max Verstappen at the Chinese Grand Prix. The Mexican driver, who has faced criticism for not matching his teammate’s performance, has been able to maintain his position at Red Bull with consistent results so far. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner criticized the media while Perez secured a spot on the front row for the race.
Horner expressed his satisfaction after qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit. He believed it was a successful day for the Milton Keynes-based team, as Perez won the qualifying race and secured pole position for the main race tomorrow. Horner emphasized Perez’s second place on the starting grid for the race.
Red Bull’s team principal criticized the press for often overlooking Perez. However, Horner acknowledged that the Mexican driver has been doing an excellent job for the team. He praised Perez’s clear mindset this season as he seeks to secure a new contract with the team for next season.
Horner stated, “You tend to underestimate him. He [Perez] is doing exceptionally well, and he has approached this season with a clear mindset. He is doing an exceptional job, and today we secured the front row.”
Red Bull has been dominant in Formula 1 since the start of the ground effect era in 2022. Max Verstappen had a remarkable season last year. However, Ferrari has made significant progress this season with extensive development over the winter. Horner admitted that the team needs to continue working on their RB20 car.
The team boss emphasized that they will continue to push forward. The entire team in Milton Keynes is working tirelessly to improve the car for the upcoming races. Horner pointed out that rivals such as Ferrari and McLaren will introduce updates during the European part of the season. Therefore, there is no time for Red Bull to become complacent.
Horner stated: “You need to stay focused and keep pushing forward. Everyone in Milton Keynes is working hard to improve the car, and once we return to Europe, I am confident that updates will come. Therefore, we cannot rest on our laurels.”
Undoubtedly, Christian Horner and Red Bull have their sights set on dominating the 2024 Formula 1 season. The team aims to win both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships once again this year. However, the second half of the season may present challenges for Milton Keynes. Therefore, it is crucial for Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez to fight for another one-two finish this weekend.
