The Cleveland Browns are off to a rocky start this season, sitting at 1-4 after five games, and quarterback Deshaun Watson is feeling the heat. In his latest outing, Watson threw for just 125 yards with one touchdown, completing 15 of 28 passes while being sacked multiple times in a rough 34-13 loss to the Washington Commanders. Amid fans’ frustrations and mounting calls for head coach Kevin Stefanski to hand play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, Watson is standing by his coach.
“We believe in Kevin,” Watson said on Wednesday. “Kevin’s been doing play calls for multiple years… So there’s no faith or love lost in Kevin calling plays. We think he’s the best play-caller in the league.” The Browns’ offensive struggles have led to increased scrutiny, and many have questioned if Watson is still the right quarterback to lead Cleveland’s offense. Despite the criticism, Stefanski confirmed he has no plans to bench Watson, asserting that improvement has to start from the top.
“We have to coach better,” Stefanski said on Monday. “Deshaun can play better, and he will play better. He’s committed to getting better, and we’re committed as an offense to putting our guys in a position to succeed.”
Watson, who has yet to reach 200 passing yards in a game this season and has thrown five touchdowns against three interceptions, faces a tough test as the Browns head to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles. Both Watson and Stefanski are determined to turn the season around, but they’ll need more consistency and effectiveness on offense to give the Browns a fighting chance in the weeks ahead.
