The Detroit Lions’ red-hot season hit a snag this week with star receiver Jameson Williams facing legal complications following a gun possession incident that nearly led to his arrest. The Lions have surged to a 6-1 record, but this development raises concerns as the team pushes toward a potentially historic season. Williams, who’s already been suspended this season for PED use, now finds himself entangled in a new controversy that could carry legal ramifications.
According to reports from 7 News Detroit, Williams was pulled over for speeding alongside his brother a few weeks before his suspension. During the stop, Williams and his brother disclosed that there were two firearms in the vehicle. One was in the back seat, registered to his brother, who held a concealed pistol license (CPL). However, the second firearm was beneath Williams’ seat—and though registered to him, Williams did not have a CPL.
Following standard protocol, the responding officer handcuffed Williams and placed him in the patrol car while verifying the details. Attempting to influence the situation, Williams noted his status as a player for the Detroit Lions. In response, the officer called in a supervisor, who turned out to be a fan of the team. The sergeant’s intervention ultimately led to Williams being released without charges or jail time—a decision that has triggered an internal investigation by the Detroit Police Department.
Detroit Police Chief James White has since ordered a full review, questioning whether Williams received favorable treatment. Commander Michael McGinnis confirmed that while the initial officer followed procedure, the supervising sergeant’s actions deviated from standard protocol. Consequently, the Detroit Police have submitted a warrant request to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, seeking potential charges of concealed weapon possession against Williams.
If charges are filed, the star wide receiver could face significant legal consequences. Meanwhile, the Lions are closely monitoring the situation, and Williams has already hired legal counsel. With the team aware of the developments, this latest episode places added pressure on the Lions’ season and could have implications for Williams’ future both on and off the field.
