The renewal of Lewis Hamilton with Mercedes was announced a few months ago, but until then there was much speculation – including a possible move to one of the other top teams like Red Bull or Ferrari.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner assured that the British driver contacted them this year: ‘We have had several conversations over the years about Lewis joining. They have contacted us a few times. More recently, earlier this year there was an approach about whether there would be any interest’.
However, Hamilton denied that this is true, stating on the championship’s website: ‘I did not approach Christian; I have not spoken to Christian for years and no one from my team has either. I checked with everyone, no one from my team contacted him. However, he contacted me about meeting up at the end of the season. And I sort of said: “I hope you’re well, I wish you all the best, congratulations on the fantastic season so far, and I hope I can compete with you in the near future’.
