Maverick Vinales continues his impressive form from Portimão to dominate the opening free practice session of the MotoGP at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. During the session, Vinales consistently set the fastest lap times, with his final sector being the key factor in securing the top position. His excellent lap time of 2:03.294s left the competition behind. Championship leader Jorge Martin finished in second place, while rookie Pedro Acosta completed the podium with another great performance. Enea Bastianini also made a late surge to secure fourth place, hoping to replicate his previous success on the track. The VR46 Ducati duo, Marco Bezzecchi and Fabio Di Giannantonio, had a respectable outing, finishing in fifth and tenth place, respectively, as they looked to boost their 2024 campaigns. Despite a strong start, the two KTM team riders, Brad Binder and Jack Miller, settled for sixth and ninth place, respectively. Franco Morbidelli delivered a solid performance to claim seventh place, finishing 0.610s behind Vinales. Gresini Ducati’s Marc Marquez finished in eighth, while his brother Alex Marquez unfortunately crashed and only managed a 20th place. Reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia had a disappointing session, finishing just outside the top 10. The Yamaha duo, Alex Rins and Fabio Quartararo, continued to struggle, finishing a second behind the leaders. Raul Fernandez and Miguel Oliveira of Trackhouse Aprilia sought a better performance in front of their home crowd but settled for 12th and 17th place, respectively. Aleix Espargaro had a tough time and finished in 19th place. The factory Honda team showed promising signs, with Luca Marini and Joan Mir finishing in 15th and 16th place, just 0.2s off the top 10. Augusto Fernandez, on the Tech3 GASGAS machine, could only manage the 19th best time. The LCR Honda team faced difficulties, with Johann Zarco and Takaaki Nakagami occupying the last two positions.
