Elfyn Evans has been involved in a serious accident during Secto Rally Finland on the second-to-last stage.
Following a challenging Saturday where he placed outside of the top 10 due to a malfunctioning driveshaft, Evans was determined to earn valuable points on the final day of Super Sunday in order to minimize the impact on his rival Thierry Neuville in the World Rally Championship title race.
Evans held the second position in the standings, trailing rally-leading teammate Kalle Rovanperä by a mere 1.2 seconds. However, he crashed early on in SS19.
The Toyota driven by the Welshman appeared to suddenly lose control at the first corner, causing him to veer off the road and collide with a tree on the opposite side.
This setback significantly diminishes Evans’ chances of winning the title, as he was already 15 points behind Neuville prior to Rally Finland and is now expected to score zero points.
