The FIA has decided to end its unsuccessful experiments with Formula 1 wheel covers in a tabloid format. The goal was to reduce spray caused by F1 cars in rainy conditions, but now other options will be considered. Last year, the FIA conducted its first test of prototype wheel arches at Silverstone, with the help of Mercedes and McLaren. Ferrari later introduced a revised version in a test at Fiorano. However, the test results were not successful, and the FIA will now go back to the drawing board. FIA’s single-seater director, Nikolas Tombazis, had previously indicated that a failed test would likely lead to the end of the wheel covers idea. FIA still plans to explore other measures to improve the drivability of F1 cars in extreme weather conditions. Real-world tests are crucial for any wet weather package solution, as simulation cannot fully replicate the effects of wet conditions. The wet weather package is designed to be a standardized kit that can be added to cars for wet races, avoiding a repeat of the controversial 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.
