The San Francisco Giants’ hunt for a new general manager is heating up, with new names entering the mix as the front office seeks a strong, public-facing candidate. Earlier this month, the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser spotlighted initial contenders, including Athletics assistant GM Billy Owens, Giants assistant GM Jeremy Shelley, and former Giants GM Bobby Evans. Now, the list has grown with the Giants reportedly targeting De Jon Watson, a former Nationals executive and current Astros special advisor, along with Royals assistant GM Scott Sharp and Logan White, a respected Padres advisor and ex-Dodgers executive.
While Evans is back in the conversation, Slusser hints that his role may be more advisory than managerial if he does return. Giants’ former World Series-winning GM Brian Sabean is also reportedly welcomed back if he decides to leave his advisory role with the Yankees. However, the Giants have chosen not to reach out to Kim Ng or Thad Levine, both prominent names in GM circles.
Levine’s departure from the Twins hints at a desire for a lead role, something San Francisco doesn’t appear ready to offer. Meanwhile, Ng, who left the Marlins over reluctance to work as second-in-command, seems unlikely to accept a similar role with the Giants. Giants’ president of baseball operations Buster Posey suggests the team is instead searching for someone with a scouting emphasis, emphasizing a GM who can represent the team publicly while Posey handles key transactions.
