At 85 years old, Giorgetto Giugiaro is a living legend of the automotive industry. The Italian talent, discovered in the 1950s by Dante Giacosa, technical director of Fiat, who was soon after requested to reinforce the team of designers at Bertone studios, has in his portfolio more than 200 famous production models, from the Alfa Romeo 2000 (still under the supervision of Nuccio Bertone) to names like the Volkswagen Golf or the Fiat Uno, and also the BMW M1, Lancia Delta, Maserati Bora, Lotus Esprit S1, DeLorean DMC-12 or Maserati Spyder.
What does the genius of automotive design think about one of the most original, controversial, and disruptive models of the modern era, the Tesla Cybertruck?
“It is the Picasso of cars,” Giugiaro replied in an interview with the newspaper La Reppublica.
“There was courage. It doesn’t represent harmony and perfection, but rather emotion and robustness,” he commented on the futuristic pickup truck from Elon Musk’s brand, an opinion shared by his son Fabrizio, also an automotive designer. “I give credit to Elon Musk for having courage and understanding people’s desire to differentiate themselves,” he said.
